As Discovered On The Department Of Building’s Web Site

powerofscourIt’s a long story— one which I care not, will not go into in great detail. Let’s just say it starts with the New York Daily News’s puff piece: The Power Of Scour (as seen at left). Therein a manifold number of politicians and “community leaders” posed for the camera and were quoted. Such things happen when elections come around.

I linked to this tome. Follows was my analysis:

1. Instead of making Greenpoint “look” safer perhaps it should simply be made safer?
2. If Greenpoint and Williamsburg are, in fact, among the dirtiest neighborhoods in the city, exactly what does this say about our elected officials? I mean, haven’t they kind of allowed this to happen?
3. Why are we asking folks to pledge to do what they should be doing already?
4. This is a shit show. Plain and simple.

Believe it or not I exercised considerable tact at the time— and now I will not.

For example: this graffiti-ed door. It belongs to 597 Manhattan Avenue— which used to be the Greenpoint Gazette’s Headquarters.

Here you see Mr. Mann, the President of the Greenpoint Chamber of Commerce and various other members of the community, looking despondent over the matter of graffiti.

Now let’s look at what the Department of Buildings has to say about 597 Manhattan Avenue. More specifically: the “No Name Bar”.

Perhaps we should take care of troubles in his own proverbial backyard before trifling with graffiti? Fire code rules and regulations are no joke. In any case, you can’t say this came out of nowhere…

Those of you who were wondering what the helicopter action was in the wee hours this morning (I was), methinks this may very well might be the reason. YIKES!

You know the drill, north Brooklynites: if you have seen Oliver (who was apparently last seen in East Williamsburg wearing a Louis Vuitton collar) or know of his whereabouts, please say something to his people. STAT.

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: A Robbery At Carmine’s?

A person we’ll call “E” Writes:

Miss Heather:Any info on the robbery at Carmine’s Pizza on Norman Ave. yesterday? I was in there around 6:30 for my evening slice, and the place was filled with cops. I thought they were just ordering slices until I realized they were questioning the workers. Evidently, some guy pulled a gun and made of with $600 or so. In broad daylight! Anyhow, please pass along anything you hear…Thanks

I have not heard anything here— but if anyone reading this has the 411 please share via comments or email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Your identity will remain anonymous if you so desire.

Thanks!

UPDATE, August 28, 2913: I have received word an arrest was made!

A person we’ll call “X” writes today at 6:09 p.m.:

Hi Miss Heather. I am a lurker on New York Shitty and I pay special attention to your posts about crimes in the area.

I was jogging near the Williamsburg Bridge today and I spotted this guy:

http://www.newyorkshitty.com/williamsburg/95049#respond

He was unmistakable. I remembered him from your post a few weeks back. The yellow bike with the blue seat was the first thing I noticed. I trailed him for a little while and watched him pull on doors, checking if they were open. We made eye contact and that’s when I stopped and called the police.

I met with the police and showed them the guy’s picture and the posting and then I kept on running. Hope they get this punk today!

First off I want to thank X for contacting the police. Well done! Although I sincerely hope he/she made a spot-on identification and the police caught this fellow, the fact of the matter is someone trying doors (so as to find one which is unlocked) is bad news. I have said it before and I’ll say it again: please, please make sure your front doors are locked/secured. Do not simply “buzz” people into your building without discerning who he/she is— or better yet: meet/greet anyone desiring access to your building in person. Ask questions. If you see anything amiss, say something to the police. STAT.

For those of you who are not in the know (I wasn’t until Eric, the wonderful proprietor of Red Star Bar informed me): this evening’s meeting regarding crime in Greenpoint has been cancelled. Whether or not this had anything to do with the Public Safety Forum scheduled by Coincilman Levin’s office which will to come to pass on the 27th at the Polish Slavic Center and a conflicting campaign event in DUMBO is anyone’s guess. Nonetheless, mark your calendars, folks!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: What Happened On Manhattan Avenue

accientareagleNYS

Per a tipster (who sent the above photo):

I heard the accident from my apartment (on the NW corner of Eagle and Manhattan). It happened a little after 9pm. No horns, no tires screeching, just a skid followed by the sound of impact. By the time I got to the front window, someone was attempting to pick the motorcyclist up from the ground by pulling on his arms until someone said not to move him. I don’t know if his helmet had been knocked off from the impact or if someone had taken it off. Another guy eventually started CPR which an EMT took over once they arrived. At that point it was clear how serious it was as the man was completely unresponsive. From the looks of it, I don’t think he survived. The driver of the car was extricated (side airbags had deployed) and was taken away on a stretcher and was the only other person taken by ambulance aside from the motorcyclist. There was a second motorcyclist at the scene who appeared to have been involved but was uninjured and later rode away. Sanitation is still cleaning up the intersection. Just a horrible, horrible thing.

Update, August 16th: Here’s what happened per the NYPD

On Thursday, August 15, 2013 at approximately 2113 hours, police responded to a motor vehicle accident at the corner of Eagle Street & Manhattan Avenue, located within the confines of the 94 Precinct. Upon arrival, officers determined that Vehicle #1, a Yamaha R6L motorcycle, operated by a M/W/18, was traveling southbound on Manhattan avenue approaching Eagle Street. At the same time, Vehicle #2, a 2011 Toyota Camry, operated by a M/B/23, was at a stop sign on Eagle street, when the operator proceeded to enter the intersection. Vehicle #1 collided into the driver’s side of Vehicle #2 as it entered the intersection. EMS responded to the location and transported both victims Woodhull hospital. The operator of Vehicle #2 suffered non-life threatening injuries and is listed in stable condition. Vehicle #1 operator sustained severe body trauma and was pronounced DOA. The investigation is ongoing.
