Has Anyone Seen Keesa?

I found this flier today on Green Street at Manhattan  Avenue after whiling away a most lively* afternoon at the junk shop. If you have seen Keesa or know of her whereabouts please contact her people at the above-listed telephone numbers. Thanks!

*READ: getting yelled at by crazed, churlish and cheap Polish women. Sadly, I missed the day’s main event: a one armed gent trying to steal a VHS tape recorder.  Believe it or not this is not the first time this dude has darkened the junk shop’s doorstep. He has also been caught stealing sneakers. My boss chased him down on Manhattan Avenue. He was carrying them by their shoestrings using his teeth.

Urban Fur: Meet Savannah

As I have mentioned previously my photography show is up at Creek & Cave. This entailed, among other things, securing some fishing line (lest it was required as a non-obtrusive means to hang my work). Fortunately (and much to my mother’s horror*) we have a tackle shop in the Garden Spot and I made the acquaintance of another hardworking feline.

Meet Savannah.

As the above images suggest this lass is not terribly interested in having her picture taken. Not when there are customers to assist and head rubs to be had. She takes her job very seriously.

I learned her story from the cashier. It is a very amusing one. Apparently Savannah was a member of a colony of cats who live behind this establishment. WAS. One day Savannah decided to come inside— and she has been under their employ ever since! Can you blame her? Cats and fishing go together like peanut butter and jelly.

If you happen to see Savannah in your Manhattan Avenue ramblings, dear readers, give her a head scratch (or nine). This is one smart (and very sweet) lady!

*I assured her that people, do in fact, fish in Newtown Creek. Some even eat their “catch”.

TOMORROW: The Greenpoint 100

Before this balmy weekend kicks off I wanted to remind my fellow Garden Spotters that tomorrow, May 1, starting at 11:00 a.m. the Greenpoint branch of the Brooklyn Public Library will be conducting its annual fundraiser, The Greenpoint 100. Not only is this a great way to acquire some very nifty art from local artists, but you’ll also be supporting a great cause: our public library. Check it out!

Reader Contribution Du Jour: Altitude

Before I proceed with this post I would like make it known that today’s postage will be decidedly lite. There are two reasons for this:

  1. For those of you who are not in the know, my mother has paid our fair city a visit. She left yesterday. I have been running around a lot the last week.
  2. In the process of said “running around” I managed to pick up head cold. Lucky me.

I am tired. But not too tired to share this shot taken by fellow Shit Tit enthusiast, my very own mother, as her plane approached La Guardia Airport.

What first caught her eye was how the sun seemed to be shining right on them as if to say:

Welcome to Greenpoint!

Potential tourist attraction or not, they certainly make for a striking view for would-be visitors and this photograph lends a note of veracity to Emily Lloyd’s assertion that these bad boys (girls?) can be seen from the Empire State Building!

In closing (and for those of you who care to know) my mother had a grand time. She was unable to attend the visitor’s center grand opening due to a scheduling conflict but did pay Mr. Acconci’s fountain its respects. She was impressed. But arguably the most interesting part of her visit to New York was not to be had by her at all. It was by a friend of hers —we’ll call “S”— and it came to pass in Queens.

Long story made very short, “S” had to change hotels. So my mother, being helpful, recommended the Best Western City View in Sunnyside. She spent the night there and got up bright and early to catch her 5:30 a.m. flight. When she ducked into the lobby at 3:30 a.m. the desk clerk appeared to be nervous. He suggested— repeatedly— that she wait for her car in the lounge and added that he had just made a fresh pot of coffee. She refused— repeatedly— and as a result became privy to a hushed conversation between said desk clerk and a potential “client”. She only caught a snippet, but that snippet pretty much says it all:

It will be $60 in cash and you have to leave by 7:00 a.m.

“S” did not see this chap’s “companion” or ascertain how much she (he?) cost, but given she had not set foot in our fair city in 25 years suffice it to say it made for quite a memorable conclusion to her visit.

THIS WEEKEND: Le Petit Boudoir Grand Opening

April 29, 2010 ·

Just over a month ago I was contacted by a very nice gentleman regarding a store he and his wife are opening on Franklin Street. His name is Mike and you might be interested to know he is the chap behind Mercat Negre on Grand Street. Naturally I had to get the 411 so I swung by. Things were a little rough— but it looked promising. As I left that day I asked Mike to give me a heads-up when they were closer to opening. This too has come to pass. In fact, I just got back from previewing what will be Le Petit Boudoir. I am pleased to report it is looking good!

Here’s what you can expect opening day (which is this upcoming Saturday!):

  • Vintage clothing
  • Sunglasses galore
  • Handmade soaps and candles (I have been told they will be using produce from Greenpoint’s very own Rooftop Farms in some of these goodies!)
  • jewelry and much, much more!

Check it out!

Closing on a Franklin Street related note, today I spoke with one of the owners of the restaurant slated to occupy 162 Franklin Street: Vamos Al Tequila. Not only was she nice enough to let me see their space…

but she assured me that enchiladas will be on their menu (which they hope to have finalized next week) and they plan to open in “10 days”. I can hardly wait!
