July 6, 2008 ·

Now that the city has seen fit to give Greenpoint some much-needed greenery, it is imperative that we learn how to take care of them! To this end a tree care workshop will be conducted next Saturday at the American Playground from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Anyone interested in participating should contact Ms. Mahoney via the above email address or phone number.

Post 4th Of July Wrap Up

July 5, 2008 ·

As I mentioned earlier today the festivities in north Brooklyn last night were a little more exuberant than usual. I suppose I should not have been surprised by this. While walking down Driggs Avenue earlier this week I found a remnant of someone’s 4th of July shopping list.

You know a serious party is in the works when olives “with red things inside” are employed. But the procurement of the proper culinary items is but only one aspect of celebrating with style in Greenpoint. When preparing for a party one should also tend to one’s personal appearance.

In regards to the previous I am very pleased to report Greenpoint met the challenge! Bitchcake’s fabulous other half —who I will call Mr. Bitchcakes— informed me today of two gentlemen he saw sitting on the steps of St. Anthony’s. Their visit to this ecclesiastic institution was not to attain spiritual enlightenment. Rather, they needed a place to sit so one could “lovingly” shave the back of his companion. Ah Greenpoint, I am certain wherever Amy Vanderbilt is (god rest her soul) she is smiling upon us with silent approval!

This year— just like the one that preceded it— the hooligans were up quite late setting off fireworks and making an all-around ruckus. And today the Mister and I went out for a walk to witness the aftermath.

If anyone out there is missing an aqua blue pump, you can find it at the intersection of Lorimer Street and Nassau Avenue.

The sidewalks in Williamsburg were eerily quiet, making it the perfect time to pick up your dry cleaning on Bedford Avenue…

or shop for some pre-owned construction equipment on South 1st Street.

Running errands sure can make a man hungry. Why not follow this chap’s example and deck out your parrot in his most patriotic diaper and grab a bite to eat on Manhattan Avenue?

Why did you do today?

Mr. Heather’s New Toy

Last night the Mister arrived home with a great big bag with “Camera Land” emblazoned on it. Its contents were easy enough to deduce: a brand new digital camera. Last night he put this new toy to good use by taking some killer photographs of fireworks. Great shot!

Sometimes Mr. Heather forgets that when I am filming my camera is not simply recording images, but also sound. As a reult the above short film not only touts some absolutely stunning imagery, but you also get the added value of listening to the Mister discuss the state of A-Rod’s marriage! If you watch very carefully you will notice the camera jerks ever so slightly at one point. This is because I am kicking Mr. Heather in the hopes he will shut up. Either he is acclimatized to being pommeled or is simply oblivious (I’m putting my money on the latter) because it didn’t work. Enjoy!

And of course here is the grand finale of last night’s fireworks display. As you will see, the festivities in Greenpoint were quite lively this year. If you want to see some seriously amazing photographs from last night’s event, be sure to check out my mini-photo set on flickr!

Happy 4th Of July From Greenpoint!

July 4, 2008 ·

The above image hails from Hausman Street, which is without argument the most patriotic block in Greenpoint. My initial plan was to create a photo set of this lovely block for everyone’s enjoyment, but photographs hardly do it justice. To this end I decided to film a walk down the block. It is hardly Academy Award winning footage, but it gives you a better idea of the pure Americana to be found on Hausman. Enjoy!

Now if you don’t mind, I’m off to savor some tofu dogs. Yeah, I’m a vegetarian, but I’m also an American!

Happy July 4th everybody!

Upcoming Newtown Creek Boat Tours

July 4, 2008 ·
Filed under: Greenpoint Magic, Long Island City, Williamsburg

As my colleague at the Gowanus Lounge noted yesterday, the Brooklyn Center for The Urban Environment will be conducting a boat tour of Newtown Creek July 13 from 9:30 a.m. until noon. For those of you who are unable to attend this event (or simply wish to avoid the heat), the Newtown Creek Alliance will be conducting another boat tour Sunday, September 14th.

I took this tour last year and I plan to do so again this year. Believe you me, it is an experience you will not soon forget. Those of you who wish to make reservations or want to learn more should contact the Newtown Creek Alliance at:

info(at)newtowncreekalliance(dot)org

Be sure to indicate you are interested in the “Creek Cruise” in the subject line.

Regardless of which tour you take, if you live in Greenpoint, “East Williamsburg” or western Queens and really want to know the environmental issues in your ‘hood, you must see (and smell) Newtown Creek yourself. Not only will you truly comprehend how big of an environmental disaster Newtown Creek is, but it will also make you wonder why no effective measures have been taken to remediate it.

I once overheard a father giving his daughter a piece of advice on the E train. It was as follows:

The most patriotic thing you can do is tell your government they’re wrong.

Make your reservation, pack your cooler, see for yourself and be a “patriot”.

My Visit To Green Tree

July 4, 2008 ·

Yesterday at long last Green Tree’s business hours and my leisure time coincided.

Intrigued to see what they had in the way of merchandise I went inside.

I was amazed by the assortment of neat stuff they had, much of which was very reasonably priced.

Speaking as a crafter and history dork, I really liked these old flag swatches. Be advised that Ireland, “Hayti”, France and Mexico are no longer in the offering: they’re mine!
