Miscellaneous Foodstuffs

There are a number of interesting food-related developments going down in the Garden Spot of the Universe. Here are three I find of particular interest. Bon apetit!

First up. it would appear that my friends south of the BQE are finally poised to get their own grocery store. Wardack Supermarkets is moving in next door to Staples (at the corner of Meeker and Kingsland Avenue). I suspect I speak for many who live in this area that this establishment cannot open soon enough!

I noticed about a month ago that the coffeehouse which formerly occupied this storefront had closed. Well, this space did stay vacant for long. It is back to being a coffeehouse/cafe and is better than ever.

This (sort of fuzzy) interior shot doesn’t really do this place justice.

Methinks this bit of food porn is more like it. These cupcakes are made by the lovely young lady in the previous photograph and I have to say they are quite amazing. I cannot wait to try these folks out for lunch. I mean, how can you NOT try a sandwich called “Makeout Party” (spicy tofu, garlic, hummus, sauerkraut, tomato, red onions on a hoagie)? You can peruse Bones’s menu by clicking here. And yes they deliver!

Even though I personally dislike chili, I cannot resist passing along an item as charming as this: The Habitat’s first annual Chili Cook-off. Those of you who are interest in tossing your hat in the ring need to swing by the bar and submit your name before the drawing on November 30. I probably shouldn’t pass along this bit of knowledge but I am going to do it anyway…

The key to creating chili that gives a good “burn” the next day is to put chili pods in it (as opposed to discarding them— which is what most Yankees do). If you don’t believe me just ask Mr. Heather; when I’m angry at him and happen to be cooking I leave them in. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

And that’s all she wrote!

  2. Cupcakes in the ‘hood? Yum! I currently trek out to Magnolia when I want a fix (yes, cliche, but sooo good and I love jaunts to that area), but we desperately needed some cupcakey goodness in Greenpoint.

  6. YOU ARE FORCED TO PATRONIZE THE MET FOOD ON DRIGGS?!? Good god, man. That place is NASTY! Let’s both go to Wardack together and volunteer to finish the place for them for FREE. Life is too short to suffer shitty grocery stores.

  8. ha, i love metfood. they have an extraordinary amount of specifically vegan stuff and they’re really responsive to suggestions. i don’t know what people’s issue with it is. i also don’t know what’s going to keep wardak from being shitty, but i don’t know anything about wardak. i was actually really hoping a huge park slope food coop sized health food store would open there. sigh.

but boneshakers i am super excited about. not just cupcakes, vegan cupcakes! and they deliver to my house. and they’re open until 10 (which isn’t late enough but for the area is pretty rad. a lot of stuff closes before i even get out of work). i went in the other day and had a burger. it was really good. i even ate the coleslaw which is something i usually find too disgusting to even think about. unfortunately they didn’t have any baked goods when i was there. it was late on a sunday.

  10. al oof & desi: if you want to see something funny (pertaining to Met Food) hop on Netflix or go to Photoplay and rent “Street Trash”:

One of the funniest parts of the movie comes to pass in said store. What’s more (disturbing) it doesn’t look much different 20 years later.

  12. oh man i’ll have to check that movie out. i guess no one was holding a gun to my head, but key food was just a little too far for me to trek to on a regular basis. can’t wait to check out wardak, the name reminds me of hordak hehe
