Greenpoint Photos Du Jour: A Little Wildlife In The Garden Spot

Today was exactly as I wanted it to be: peaceful and even a little bit dull. That is until this evening when my buddy Laura tipped me off to the excitement unfolding in far north Greenpoint.

A raccoon took residence in a tree on Manhattan Avenue between Clay and Box Street.

Amusingly enough he (or she)  is hanging his hat across the street from the Greenpoint Hotel and the Marzili Hostel. Maybe they were booked tonight?

Or maybe they have a “no raccoons allowed policy”? This is a shame as he (or she) is pretty darned cute!

    3. I’ll take my chances with a raccoon any day before a skunk. Yes, Greenpoint has skunks. They live along the waterfront around Java Street.

    4. I saw a raccoon scurrying across the waterfront on India street once. I was with an Australian friend who got really excited because they have no raccoons in Australia. Oh Australia!

    5. There is also a raccoon on Huron street. It has been sighted across from 118.

    6. divinem7, It’s funny you mention that because one of the neighborhood youths said (and I quote): Don’t raccoons come from Australia or something? YUP.

    7. I’ve seen the one on Huron. At dusk a few weeks ago, it was strolling on the sidewalk. We looked at each other for half a minute then it went scurrying down a driveway. It was cool. 🙂

    9. Gothamist just reported a notice about rabid raccoons in all the boroughs and since it is clearly daylight in this photo you might want to report this.

    10. It goes without saying that it’s never a good idea to approach wild animals. However, while the photo shows daylight, that raccoon looks like he/she is napping. I believe coordination also suffers with rabies so it is doubtful that a sick raccoon would manage to stay perched in a tree.
