Those of you who are wondering what the police and fire department presence is about at the intersection of Eagle Street and Manhattan Avenue, I can tell you. There was a collision between a moped and automobile.

I happened upon a witness who kind enough to give me the 411. Apparently the blue car, which was headed south, made a left hand turn and the moped (which was headed north) could not stop in time. I was told the driver of the moped sustained minor injuries. If so, he (or she) was very, VERY lucky. Nonetheless, this does bring up the issue speeding on Manhattan Avenue. Anyone who lives north of Green Street will tell you that motorists are driving WAY too fast down this stretch. The intersection of Eagle Street and Manhattan Avenue needs is a traffic light. Otherwise, the next time an accident comes to pass here (and rest assured, it will) the outcome may not be as fortuitous.

  2. This kinda feels like you’re putting the blame for this accident squarely on the driver of the car for speeding. This kind of accident can happen at any intersection regardless of the speed of either vehicle.

  4. At the expense of being nit picky, the moped DID have the right of way. The person driving the car should have waited for the moped to pass, then make his turn. Why are people so damned impatient?

  6. Very true, Miss Heather. I’m having a tough time viewing this as anything other than the blue car’s fault. I’d bet that speed wasn’t a factor, but car drivers have a difficult time seeing two-wheeled transportation, and it looks like this driver just didn’t see the moped coming the opposite direction.

I walked past the scene as they were loading the moped rider into the ambulance on a back board. It didn’t look great from across the street, but people strapped to boards never do. I’m glad to hear the injuries were minor.

  8. I was told the moped rider was alert and the injuries he/she sustained were “minor”. The way I see it these injuries, be they major or minor, shouldn’t have happened in the first place. The fact of the matter is someone making a left hand turn should yield to oncoming traffic. The blue car didn’t.

On that note I want to tender my sincerest wishes to the moped driver’s recovery.

  10. When every native hilljack NYer stops driving, that’s when I will get back on a two wheeled machine.

  12. I’m willing to bet that speed wasn’t a factor in this particular case, since the moped rider lived.

In fact the blue car must have been proceeding rather slowly to only cause minor injuries, especially since most moped riders don’t wear any more protection than an open faced bicycle helmet.

  14. Doesn’t make it any less the driver’s fault though. WATCH WHERE YOU’RE GOING YOU FUCKING PEOPLE.

  16. I stepped out of my house on Saturday morning to go get some coffee at Champion, and saw this accident 5 seconds later. Awesome. The driver – twenty-something male – turned in front of the moped rider – twenty-something male – who had the RoW. It was clearly the blue car driver’s fault. Moped rider slammed on his brakes, skidded, and his bike hit the car above the passenger-side wheel well. He was thrown up on the side of the car, and then landed on the road. Probably going 20 – 25 mph or so. Amazingly, the moped rider stood up, walked off to the sidewalk, took off his helmet, sat down, then stood up to confront the driver. The driver claimed he hadn’t seen him. Ambulance came, people gawked, I got coffee, already thoroughly woken up. Moped rider: hope you’re ok.
