LAST GASP: Homicide at Huron & Manhattan Avenue?

I have received two emails about this incident. L writes:

Hi Miss Heather —

fyi – just saw this on Gothamist news map — sending as your investigative reporting is the BEST —

Homicide | Manhattan Ave & Huron St Manhattan, NY | 1/24/2010 5:31 p.m.

(lest it seems i regularly read crime reports (!), was looking for info on why a helicopter was buzzing my neighborhood for an hour last nite – but no report)

…gothamist newsmap homicide manhattan / huron?!

what’s the story?

That’s what I want to know. The story.

When I got off the B43 at 5:00 p.m.-ish today I saw an ambulance, two police cars and a handful of lookie-loos between India and Huron Street. If there was an “incident” it happened well before I came on the scene. I suspect I speak for many fellow Greenpointers when I write that I find this very disturbing. If anyone reading this has the 411 please tender them via comments or via email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com.

P.S.: L also writes;

…& while we’re on subject of crime – also on Gothamist, saw 2 reports of armed robberies at Roebling & N 9th in a week – one’s on today’s list (from last nite) — both evening, NOT middle of nite — that’s a dark & quiet corner — but seems stalled development has made things worse.

  2. If you click on “MNS” at the top of the Newsmap, you can sometimes get more details on the crime (if it was reported by MNS; BNN reports are pretty sparse). In this case, it says:

    Homicide
    Manhattan Ave & Huron St
    Manhattan, NY
    1/24/2010 5:31 p.m.
BROOKLYN: *HOMICIDE* MANHATTAN AVE & HURON ST, PD HAS A CRIME SCENE IN REGARDS TO A PERSON FOUND STABBED DOA INSIDE A BUILDING, (c) [MNS463]

  4. AH, thanks for the tip duckfeather! Truth be told I was so tired and freaked out by this I missed that.

This makes sense. When I walked by there was no crime scene tape, etc: only police cars and an ambulance. This led me to believe this must have happened inside a residence, not on the street. The residence in question was on Manhattan Avenue near Huron Street. Not on Huron Street proper. No matter how you cut it, this is really troubling.

  6. From the NY Post’s Daily blotter: Cops are investigating the mysterious death of a man in Greenpoint.
Patrick LaGreca, 47, was found on the kitchen floor of his apartment on Manhattan Avenue near India Street at around 4 p.m. yesterday, cops said.
His body was discovered after his girlfriend grew concerned after not hearing from him for a while and asked a third person to check on him.
He had head trauma, but it wasn’t clear if it was from a fall or if he was beaten.

  8. God, what a horrible way to find out your boyfriend is dead!

  10. Well, according to Deputy Inspector Dennis M. Fulton at the January 19, 2010 Community Council Meeting “Crime is down.” While talking about crime in Greenpoint, he stated, “We’ve never been safer”, “We live in a very safe neigbhorhood” and (my personal favorite) “Statistics show, Greenpoint is the place to be.”

Statistics are only as good as the reports taken, which we all know are discouraged in this neighborhood. As for murder, well, it’s not that easy to sweep those statistics under the corrupt and dirty rug. It’s sort of ironic in the good ol’ Greenpoint way that Frank Serpico’s interview was published this week.

  12. I hope for some peace for Mr. Legreca’s family and those who loved him.

  14. h0h0h0: I am in total agreement with that. One can only imagine what they are experiencing right now.

  16. Fuck, I live right around the corner from this.

Interestingly, the popular NY Times homicide map doesn’t show this murder: http://projects.nytimes.com/crime/homicides/map
