I have been hearing a lot of buzz about this, the Brooklyn Do Gooder Awards, for some time. Enough so that I feel compelled to mention it here. Having gotten that out of the way, I will get to the purpose of this post: after much careful consideration I have decided that Garden Spotters deserve their own version of this sinecure. Why, you ask? Very simple: while Greenpoint may very well be a part of Brooklyn, much of Brooklyn is most decidedly not Greenpoint. Ours is a very unique community and what constitutes a “do gooder” here may not exactly fit the criteria the folks at the Brooklyn Community Center had in mind. CASE IN POINT: one of the categories they have is “caring neighbors”. I can think of no better example of a “caring neighbor” than the person who saw fit to dismantle this pay phone. It has been (and unfortunately will probably continue to be) a problem for some time.

It is not my purpose to denigrate the efforts of people who feed our poor, educate our youth, create much-needed green spaces and/or organize our communities. They are needed. BADLY. However, not everyone has the time and/or expertise to effect such changes in our borough— but he (or she) might have a pair of bolt cutters, tube of caulk and an ax to grind! These are the people I want to hear about— from you! Here are the rules:

  1. I am receptive to pretty much anything. Ask yourself: Who do I think makes Greenpoint a better/special place? This is very much open to interpretation. No act and/or reason is too trivial— provided your explanation is lucid— and preferably— entertaining.
  2. I am also open to Greenpointers who make herculean efforts to better our community in more conventional ways, e.g.; tenant advocacy, feeding our hungry, rescuing abandoned and/or abused animals, cleaning up our community’s manifold number of environmental issues, etc.
  3. Other than that there are no rules. Or I will make them up as I go along because that’s the Greenpoint way!

You can tender your submissions via comments or email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Miss Heather
