A person we’ll call “M” writes (via comments on this post):

its open now. boyfriend met a guy who showed him an ID, assured him that the shelter was for people who have jobs. he was rushing back to beat the 10pm curfew. saw him the next night, with another guy from the shelter, a little more drunk than the night before, but still personable. so, not sure about the september opening date, unless i slept through august (which i was trying to do).

After some (somewhat) polite nut-twisting (this) I got an answer from our City Councilman. Here it is:

So there have you. Thanks Mr. Levin.

UPDATE, August 15, 2012: It has been brought to my attention that a temporary Certificate of Occupancy was issued for this property in July.

Looks like someone dropped the ball.

  2. This is a city agency – and Mr. Levin had no idea that they were opening? What else does he not know?

  4. The issue methinks you are touching upon is one of transparency. Neither the Department of Homeless Services nor Mr. Levin (to his credit, he has been VERY responsive to constituent concerns of late) have stellar track records in this respect. Regardless of one’s position on the issue, it would simply be nice to know if/when this facility opened. Apparently this is asking too much of our city.

  6. Agreed – the record shows that DHS has been shadowy. But as our representative – regardless of his powers to stop it – he should at least keep us in the know. This really is a question of assigning this to one of his staffers and asking them to follow up.

If some random person has to find this out the way you did, no, he is not doing his job and is not responsive to constituent concerns. I think he keeps you in the know because of the popularity of your blog, and is responsive to you. I wouldn’t extrapolate to the rest of his constituents.

Thank you, as always for the update.

  10. And of yeah: I’d be remiss if I did not point out what these guys pulled was pretty darned brilliant. They were required to inform our Community Board when this facility opened. Our Community Board is presently on summer break. Thus declare an emergency and open the shelter early. Problem solved!
