I have been asked what happened on Java Street last weekend by a concerned neighbor. Sadly, it appears to be much worse than I had been initially led to believe. Per the 94th Precinct:

The New York City Police Department is asking the public’s assistance identifying the suspect wanted for rape within the confines of the 94 Precinct. Details are as follows:

On Sunday, June 16, 2013 at 0001 hours the victim, a F/W/26, was walking in the vicinity of 198 Java Street when she was approached by the suspect who attempted to strike up a conversation with her. The suspect, armed with a knife, then raped the victim.

The suspect is a male white, or hispanic, 25-35 years old, 5’9″ tall with  a medium build and dark hair. He was wearing a black tee short with an unknown design on the front, blue jeans and was carrying a knapsack.

Anyone with information in regards to this rape is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.

The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577.

Those who care to do so can view the surveillance footage by clicking here. Be careful out there, folks!

  2. For what it’s worth,
the surveillance video of the suspect that is offered by CBS news is more easily viewed, without commercial interruptions.
However, It should have been slowed down to be of any real potential use.
By the way, the manner in which “The Brooklyn Paper” describes this (as the the first “documented” rape in Greenpoint this year, as opposed to several “date rapes”) sounds much like those Mid-Western Republican Congressmen-idiots who talk about “real” rape.
Rape is rape — totally unacceptable under any and all circumstances.
