From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Very Different Kind of Urban Fur

Vinny writes:

Hey Miss Heather!

Next to my office in Long Island City is a taxi medallion company and they have a few strays that live there (a nice lady comes by each day and leaves food for them).  Yesterday, as I was leaving work, I saw two furry critters chowing down.  On closer inspection, one of them wasn’t your usual urban fur!

Head over to Vinny’s site and watch this video for yourself. Seeing is truly believing!

Miss Heather

P.S.: Thanks for passing this along Vinny!

  2. LOVE THIS! I’m 99% sure this is the colony we TNR’d last winter. We called it our “Greasy Paws” project. You can see photos of the process here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1257094@N24/pool/. Yes, we did have a problem with the possums :D! I love them and they are amazing critters don’t get me wrong, but they kept going in the traps we set up for the cats. It may have been the same one who kept going in again and again, not sure. Stephanie who writes the Big City Little Kitty blog (http://bigcitylittlekitty.blogspot.com/) might be able to ID the cat. I think it’s Beetle, named after the old VW she liked to sit on. All the cats but one, who disappeared when we trapped, were spayed/neutered, vaccinated and treated for parasites. The possum we let be. He looks very healthy!

  4. Yup! I was able to identify the site because my husband and I have walked by it on the way to and from La Vuelta. Have you tried that place, Lisa? It’s really, really good!

  6. No I haven’t. I just checked the website and couldn’t get the menu to load. Veggie options? It looks nice. I’m going to ignore the yelp reviews because yelp reviews are completely unreliable good and bad!

  8. If I eat there is HAS to be vegetarian! I usually get rice and beans and the salad with raspberry lime vinaigrette dressing. The latter most is AMAZING. They also do nice nachos and their sangria is arguably some of the best in the city. Period.

  10. Lisa: Judging from the pictures, it’s Muffler. Definitely. Been seeing him (her?) around A LOT lately for some reason.

As for La Vuelta: Ilya, the owner, is the coolest guy ever, and the place is one of the best ever. The food is great and the drinks aren’t watered down garbage 🙂

  12. @ Lisa: My only admonition would be it is a little pricier than most of the places we go to. However, it is totally worth it. The Mister and I should take you there, our treat, as a “thank you” for Jerzy. He is truly a special little guy.

  14. Great video!!!
Yes, either Beetle http://tinyurl.com/32amwo2 or Grommet http://tinyurl.com/32tp4r5. I think Grommet cuz the tail looks normal and Beetle has a kinked tail! I blogged about their TNR here: http://forcatssake.blogspot.com/2009/11/proper-introduction.html
    Meet the Greasy Paws Mafia!

  16. I just saw Vinny’s comment – Muffler is unmistakable! Must be Muffler!

  18. Oh yeah. It’s Muffler. Just looked at your pics. 100% Muffler 🙂

I love those cats. I see one or two of them every day. I’m so happy to see someone is taking care of them!!

  20. That’s great Vinny! Muffler is the one cat we didn’t trap. She or he is probably spayed or neutered already. When we were trapping, the neighbors and people walking by were for the most part supportive. It was Michael who owns Muddy Paws Pet Supply in Williamsburg who told us about the cats in the first place and now he lets us do cat adoption events in the store every weekend. He used to see lots of kittens running around and was concerned. We also got lucky that there are a number of neighbors and employees of local businesses who feed them regularly.

  22. I love how the possum is less skittish, it just doesn’t give a crap and just wants to EAT. What a fantastic sight!

  24. @lisa Michael is a great guy. I’ve known him about 13 years, actually. He’s the brother of one of the owners of my company, which is probably how he saw the little fellers 🙂

    What a small world!
