A Very Special Dung Of The Day: Street Art

January 27, 2009 ·
Filed under: Dung of the Day, Other Shit, Williamsburg

I am certain many of you hereabouts are familiar with Paul Richard. He is the guy that goes around putting his signature on stuff and calls it art. I have never been a big fan of his work (in fact I detest it). That is, until I saw this.

This delightful image comes courtesy of my Flickr contact AP. He writes:

…this was on bedford (surprise), i think between maybe N5th and 6th…just leaning against a wall.

Is it art? I don’t know. However I have only the utmost respect for someone who has the chutzpah to touch this mattress. Shit stain aside, I’d be terrified of taking a few friends home if you know what I mean! Otherwise if the former owner of this mattress is reading this, you might want to pay a visit to the Bedwetting Store.

Looking For A Little Romance On Valentine’s Day?

January 25, 2009 ·
Filed under: Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg

do-polskithumbLooking for a place to take your honey (or hubby) this upcoming Valentine’s Day? I suppose you could luxuriate at our local bed and breakfast* but my buddy over at Brooklyn11211 found a better deal. He writes:

Somewhere, a publicist has earned his wings:

two of Brooklyn’s coolest hotels – hotel le jolie and hotel le bleu[…] are offering the ideal Valentine’s Day Packages for couples wishing to experience a romantic rendezvous in Brooklyn’s trendiest neighborhoods.

Amenities at Le Jolie from February 10-15 include (I shit you not):

  • Accommodations for two nights
  • Rose petals scattered throughout the room
  • Chocolates upon arrival
  • $50 American Express Gift Certificate (Based on a two-night minimum and one American Express Gift Certificate per stay)
  • Complimentary continental breakfast

For only $219 a night! For a real pisser check out this site (the source of the above hilarity). You can read the rest of my Williamsburg colleague’s piquant commentary by clicking here.

Since when was 4th Avenue in Park Slope? Since when has “bumping uglies” on 4th Avenue or whilest overlooking BQE (sans illicit substances) been considered romantic for that matter? Then again who I am to judge? The Mister and I spent our honeymoon in the Bronx.

P.S.: Big props go out to my friend Brooklyn11211 for posting this. It made my day.

*I have noticed a disturbing number of search queries on my blog’s “backend” for hotels in Greenpoint. For all intents and purposes there are none. Take thee loved ones and friends to Sunnyside. Do NOT send them HERE. This is not a hotel. The Greenpoint Hotel is a flophouse.

Thought Of The Day

Instead of making crappy remakes of good movies why don’t they make good remakes of crappy movies?

Just a thought.

P.S.: I would be remiss if I didn’t toss in my two cents about the ginormous abomination being built behind this billboard. Here it is.

To put a spin on what is inscribed at the James Farley Post Office:

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays this developer from the swift completion of his appointed annointed pile of crap.

TOMORROW: Free Spirits (In More Ways Than One)

January 17, 2009 ·

As promised here are a couple of events for those of you looking for something to do tomorrow.

stepssmall

First up, Apartment Show will be hosting their first group show entitled “Free Spirits”.

freespiritinvite

Perhaps I have lived in Greenpoint too long but when I first saw the title of this event I thought free booze was in the offering. It isn’t: this event is (as the above invitation clearly states) strictly B.Y.O.B. This is not to suggest this isn’t worth checking out (it looks very interesting). These folks might want to be a little more prudent with their use of the word “free” in their ad copy.

APARTMENT SHOW!
January 18, 2008, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m.
790 Manhattan Avenue #2R
Brooklyn, New York 11222

Those of you who are interested in free suds might find the following of interest.

Starting at 9:00 p.m. Glasslands will be hosting a fundraiser for the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project. What is the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project, you ask? Here are the deets per their press release:

The mission of the Memorial Project is to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by leading a project to create a memorial to honor his national and international contributions to world peace through non-violent social change.

We want to use this event to remind people that without the tireless efforts of civil rights activists like Martin Luther King Jr., (as well as those who came before and after him) we might not able to celebrate Obama’s historic inauguration. So let’s party in honor of the fulfillment of Martin Luther King’s dream!

Michael Patrick of Designer Drugs, as well as DJ Mannes and Steve Lurkel of PennedMadness.com are slated to perform and Elle Rex will be on hand to work her photographic magic. Those of you who are interested in attending should RSVP via email at: Ihaveabeat@gmail.com. If you do you’ll save $5.00. Otherwise the cover at the door will set you back $12.00.

I HAVE A BEAT
January 18, 9:00 p.m. – 4:00 a.m.
Glasslands
289 Kent Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11211

In closing I have to say that exactly how the purpose of this fundraiser can be reconciled with a free hour of Colt 45 is beyond me. It strikes me as being a bit tasteless. Then again I suspect many of the folks who will be attending this event are not old enough to remember gems like this.

But I suppose free beer for a good cause is better than no beer.

Boobification Photo Du Jour: Racked At The Gutter

January 11, 2009 ·

Yesterday a few of my friends and I whiled away the day bowling. We paid for two hours thinking (in our naivete) they’d let us finish the second round. They didn’t. They cut us off. Nonetheless before they tossed us out my buddy over at Bad Advice achieved her dream: cracking 100.

You’re a 300 (or whatever they consider to be a perfect score) in my book! As are the other wonderful Greenpoint, Williamsburg, “East” Williamsburg friends who ventured out to celebrate my birthday. Thank you!

Otherwise I saw fit to leave my calling card at the Gutter. I like to call it “Racked In Black”.

Fillmore Place, Revisited

January 10, 2009 ·

Shortly after writing this post I received an email from my buddy over at Brooklyn11211. In a nutshell this missive stated that this block was on the docket to become landmarked. At the time (and I mean no disrespect to my colleague when I write this) I thought to myself:

That’s fine and dandy. Let’s see if it really happens.

In other words: I’ll believe it when I see it. Actions speak louder than words. Especially when one lives in an area where a number of noteworthy buildings have been needlessly and careless razed.

Well yesterday I received an email from the Waterfront Preservation Alliance of Greenpoint & Williamsburg. It was entitled “Fillmore Place Calendaring at Landmarks on Tuesday” and it read as follows:

Williamsburg is on its way to having its first Historic District:

Fillmore Place Starts Landmarking Process
