Spotted At 195 Franklin Street: Closed For Good?

October 15, 2012 ·

The old(er)-timers reading this tome might recall this establishment’s previous incarnation: the Greenpoint Coffee House. This establishment was quite popular and its closure was the source of much distress— and anger— to a great many people in this community. If what I saw passing by on any given day was any indication, it would appear that its successor never quite caught on. As for what will happen next— that is for us to wait and see. The sign clearly states that while closed for good, a new restaurant will open under new management next year. Hmm…

I recently noted that 159 Franklin Street, formerly known as the Greenpoint Coffee House, appeared to be nearing completion. Well, according to an email I received it would appear I was right! A tipster we’ll call “Cat” writes:

…you had asked about updates for the Garden Spot Cafe, which will open in the location of the former Greenpoint Coffee House.  Jeff, the owner of both the building and the new cafe (who is also the manager for the building where I live) told me yesterday that he expects to open soon, possibly within a month.  From what he told me, it sounds like the cafe will serve standard American fare and will have a full liquor license.  In my own self interest I asked of there would be some vegetarian selections and he said yes.  I’m not sure how much publicity he is looking for at this point or if he has a whole PR campaign planned, but Jeff is a nice guy and a lifelong resident of Greenpoint so I hope he gets the word out soon and does well in his latest Greenpoint endeavor.

So there have you.

Coming To Greenpoint: A Bike Shop & A Homeless Shelter?

If the folks fixing up 1078 Manhattan Avenue (the former digs of Greenpoint Furniture) are to be believed this former will be the case! They did not divulge the name of their establishment, however, they said they were shooting for a September 1 opening date. So there have you!

And closing on a decidedly different note it has been brought to my attention that 400 McGuinness Boulevard may very well become a homeless shelter. Here’s the forwarded email I received from a tipster. It comes from the Manager of Community Board 1:

Not only is this a hop-skip from our soon-to-be new bike shop, but this “assessment center”, if green-lighted, will be a turd’s toss from the Newtown Creek Nature Walk. Fascinating.

P.S.: If what I saw walking by today is any indication, it would also appear the Garden Spot Cafe may be ready to open its doors. Soon.

Spoke to a source [My landlord] who apparently owns the building greenpoint coffee house was in, and says they’re planning on opening the garden spot cafe by june 1st, redoing it all, menu and etc, w/ barbecue and pot roast and etc, and get this: a garden! Apparently there’s a back yard on Green Street the coffee house didn’t have access to, but they’re going to be opening it up.

Can’t wait for summers in the sun.

From the looks of things I’d say they have their work cut out for them!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Bar At 200 Franklin?

Hello Miss Heather,

I have a question I was hoping you might be able to help provide some insight on, seeing as you are generally my go to source for Greenpoint related news. I live on the corner of Franklin and Huron and for the past 2 years have learned to ignore the monstrosity being built down the block from me. However, I might have accidentally warmed up to it a little bit, if only because the construction workers were extremely polite and cordial-to the point where I actually looked forward to seeing them in the morning and evening as I went on my commute.  Anyway, I’ve started to notice some activity in the ground floor store fronts and am curious as to what is going in. I didn’t see any signs posted that might provide answers, but in the store front right on the corner of Franklin and India I saw the potential for a coffee shop/restaurant. Mainly some chairs, maybe a fridge, a chalkboard menu with was I think was “English Breakfast” and reasonable prices.  Is there any chance the Greenpoint Coffee House might have found a new home? Or am I just projecting my owns dreams and desires into this store front?

Here’s what I know:

  1. The last day the Greenpoint Coffee House was open there was a liquor license petition for a tavern serving “light fare” to be located this address.
  2. I have heard rumors— and that’s just what they are, rumors— that some folks from the Greenpoint Coffee House are behind this endeavor.

In any case, it certainly appears a bar will be taking this space. The buzz I have heard affirms this.

On a related note, you might be interested to know the Garden Spot Cafe (which will be taking over the Greenpoint Coffee House’s old space and is purported to open this spring) has applied for and been awarded a liquor license. In closing, I’s like to pass along this liquor license application I found while poking around Community Board 1’s web site:

Lest you are wondering where 1110 Manhattan Avenue is located, it is directly across the street from the place formerly known as the Greenpoint Hotel.

Miss Heather

P.S.: Here’s one last piece of tantalizing neighborhood gossip.

It is rumored the people behind 7A are behind the restaurant slated to grace Casa Mon Amour’s old space at 162 Franklin Street.

P.S.: On a related note, does anyone have the 411 about the petition (as seen in the foreground of the above photograph) that  a “tavern” serving light fare should be allowed at 200 Franklin Street (AKA: Karl’s latest piece of krap)? My curiousity is seriously piqued.
