That’s right folks: the Halloween decorating (courtesy of a wonderfully sweet lady named Beverly) has begun.
It’s looking good!
Ghoulishly good!
As happenstance would have it, I bumped into the head of the 94th himself, Deputy Inspector Hurson, just around the corner on Driggs Avenue. I asked him if he had checked out this display. He had not. However, he did state that he had checked out 648 Humboldt Street. He was impressed— and rightfully so!
I took a moment to tell the folks responsible for this ever-growing display that I really liked the “day care” tableau (as seen above) and the girl in the pink dress reminded me of Courtney Love. They found this quite amusing— but added with a wink that this year might be their final run. I suspect I speak on the behalf of a number of north Brooklynites when I write:
Say it isn’t so!

Hi Miss Heather,I’ve been subscribing to your blog for quite a while – I think you do an excellent job, really enjoy your posts. I’m eating dinner at Lomzynianka tonight and wanted to walk by some xmas lights afterward. What’s your suggestion on a ‘greatest hits’ of holiday lights in Greenpoint? Thanks a lot and keep up the great work.Thanks for the kind words, Jack! I assure you they are much appreciated! That said, here are my recommendations:
- 648 Humboldt Street
- 97 Russell Street
- 57 Franklin Street
- Oak Street (all of it)
- Huron Street has two great houses: one is between Manhattan and McGuinness, the other is between Manhattan and Franklin. Trust me, you’ll know them when you see them.
- Hausman Street just north of Meeker Avenue
- And of course, there’s the El Blablazo Community Christmas tree (which graces this post). This can be found on Manhattan Avenue between Eagle and Dupont Street.
Have a delicious dinner and enjoy the holiday extravaganza, Jack! Speaking for myself I will be taking it easy. I have a very ambitious Christmas dinner to prepare. Last night I made vegetable stock and tomatillo sauce. I am pleased to announce no one was hurt!

*With no snow! Inasmuch as I hate to say it, this snow-less season is irking me. It is a tradition at Chez Shitty to watch The Shining during the first blizzard of the season. Mind you, while raiding the liquor cabinet— this provides the ambiance!

Yesterday I shared the good news about 648 Humboldt Street’s Halloween decoration extravaganza. Today I will give equal time to their neighbor (and friendly competitor): 97 Russell Street.
At long last my itch for demonic clowns has been scratched!
Impressive.
Abandon all hope ye who enter here!
NOTE: this butcher knife wielding gentleman is wearing a NYC Department of Corrections ball cap. I found this to be a tremendously amusing touch. When asked by the owner of this house why I found this so entertaining I couldn’t muster a satisfactory answer. I just do.
The headless horseman is on the synthesizer.
Satan himself is twinkling the ivories.
A ghostly quartet provides the chorus.
And a good time was had by all— even the rats got into the act!

Today yours truly found herself traipsing all over the Garden Spot. First it was a belated visit to the Shit Tits. Then I checked out the Greenpoint Food Market (which I highly recommend). After that I swung over to 180 Frost Street to see what’s shaking. Somewhere in between I checked on the progress of my two favorite Halloween haunts: 648 Humboldt Street (whose staple I like to call “the Humboldt Hurler” which graces the beginning of this post) and 97 Russell Street. The competition is heating up and it’s looking good. Follows is a slide show highlighting their progress. Enjoy!
