New York Shitty Slide Show du Jour, Part II: Business As Usual
As promised follows are some highlights from my sojourn around north ‘Point this afternoon. Aside from the two above-depicted houses (which can be found on Freeman Street between Manhattan Avenue and McGuinness Boulevard and are lacking electricity) the damage was minimal. Rather, it would appear that the Garden Spot has (inasmuch as is possible) regained its sense of normalcy. As you will see we are enjoying our (scant) public spaces, the El Blablazo tree has survived; some hapless soul was (is?) awaiting access to the Box House Hotel and I even met a dog named “Kitty”. While not depicted, Jerzy (AKA: the chap who lives in a truck on Franklin Street), is safe and sound— if quite busy! I suspect he feels the same way we all do: it’s nice to have our neighborhood— replete in all its glorious eccentricity— back. On that note and without further ado, enjoy!

Now At 77 Box Street: WTF?
I suspect some of you have wondered, gentle readers, exactly what the deal is with the inexplicable bit of residential property (as seen above from the stairwell of the Pulaski bridge) perched atop this otherwise industrial building. I know I have. So you can imagine my delight when today— at long last— I got an answer: it is a hotel!
More specifically: it is The Box House Hotel. After I stopped laughing I headed home without delay. I simply had to see this website for myself.
It is truly something to behold. Follows is my favorite passage for your edification and/or amusement:
Not a hotel in your traditional sense, but what we offer are gorgeous designer loft apartments available for rental, either weekly or monthly. Very private. Located in the Industrial chic area of North Greenpoint. Walking distance to the Vernon-Jackson 7 train ( 1 stop from Grand Central station) or The Greenpoint avenue G train.
I have lived in Greenpoint for over 11 years now. I honestly did not know this area (which is a used-condom’s toss from the Newtown Creek Waste Water Treatment Facility) constituted “chic”. Obviously I am way behind the times. Thus desiring to get caught up— and learn what constitutes “Industrial chic”— I pulled up a satellite map via Google. Follows are my findings/conclusions:
“Industrial chic” (as found in north Greenpoint, anyway) is any one/combination of the following:
- McGuinness Boulevard
- The Pulaski Bridge
- A rather large DOT Facility
- Continental Auto Parts
- McGuinness Power Brake Service
- Newtown Creek
- Motiva and (albeit some ways down the road)
- One very short block away from a 200 bed assessment center for homeless, single men.
Who knew?!? I certainly didn’t! I suppose it goes without saying that such luxe environs (and accommodations) come at a price. Without further ado, here are the rates. Get your checkbooks ready!

Okay, this isn’t so much a word as a WHAT. Note how the artist responsible for this masterpiece took great care to make it known this thing (an extra-terrestrial, perhaps?) is most decidedly female.

Greenpoint Degentrification Watch: Anyone Have $2.6 Million?
If so 48 Box Street, one of yours trulys favorite pieces of real estate insanity, can be yours! What in my opinion makes this listing so special is the advertising copy. It runs as follows:
Magnificent new building in the up coming neighborhood of Green Point, Williamsburg and Lic. Distance to Newtown Creek where thousands of residents are planned, tax abatements for 16 years, 1 car garage, storage space, 8′ concrete, top of the line appliances, height ceilings, Co as now pending on last 2 test.
I checked the Department of Buildings online database and sure enough, this building has no Certificate of Occupancy. I suppose this should come as no surprise. It’s not like the folks who constructed this building gave much thought or concern about such trivialities (including Stop Work Orders) before. As for using Newtown Creek and eight feet of concrete as a selling tool, it remains to be seen how effective this marketing strategy will be. My closing thoughts: if you are going to take this rather unorthodox approach to neighborhood “amenities” why not toss in “steps away from the Pulaski Bridge, McGuinness Boulevard and the Newtown Creek Nature Walk (featuring the Shit Tits— as seen on television!) as well?
