Greenpoint Restaurant Watch: Activity At Ichiran?

If today had an overriding theme it would be one of restaurants. I started my morning with an employee of Cafecito recounting how one of our more colorful citizens threw a fit last night when he refused to serve her (because she was drunk) and she hit him on the back of the head with a menu. Apparently she threw a coffee cup at one of the cooks on another occasion. Speaking as someone who has been on the business-end of this woman’s behavior (she grabbed my arm and went on a five minute tirade on the sidewalk because I refused to give her Halloween candy last year) I find this behavior, however aberrant or inconceivably, entirely plausible. Not only is this woman certifiably nuts, but she also has a thing for elephants. I know this because she is also a frequent patron of the junk shop. Whenever we get in anything of a pachydermal nature I cringe. No matter how intoxicated or otherwise impaired she may be, this woman has an uncanny ability to locate any and all things elephantine in the store. When she does she invariably proceeds to shout:

Olifant! Olifant!

Over and OVER. To be perfectly frank, it’s downright unnatural— and a bit creepy. But that is not what this post is about. This is.

Video evidence of someone actually working in what has long been promised to be Ichiran’s noodle shop! I pointed this most auspicious (and overdue) activity out to a neighbor, he told me not to get my hopes up. He is under the distinct impression someone is living in this space.

This just keeps getting stranger and stranger folks!

I have received a number of emails in the last 24 hours regarding this much-anticipated and long-awaited noodle shop slated to grace 1015 Manhattan Avenue. Here’s one such example. Christo writes:

Hi Heather

Remember when the noodle shop (ICHIRAN) next to Triangolos had the “registration” box hanging off the front of the building? Well I put my info on the box about 6 months ago, and this is the first contact I received back.

Thought you might be interested.

Eater beat me to the punch announcing this (you can get their take on this infamous email by clicking here). Regardless, here’s what I saw while walking by this afternoon.

Signs of actual activity! Not only is the gate open (so presumably someone is working in there) but they have taped up a smallish sign in the window reading “Ichiran” and no less than two announcements about their web site registration!

Could Ichiran at long last be readying itself to open? I can only hope so. I suspect I speak for many of my fellow Greenpointers when I write that on a dreary day like this I could really use a hot bowl of ramen soup!

Curious Happenings At Ichiran

After serving up free samples of soup last year and months of inactivity, something appears to be happening at 1013 Manhattan Avenue. Will Ichiran be opening for business soon? If so, will it be a ramen shop? I do not know. But this storefront has been open the last three days and signs of human activity have been noted…

Check out this post on Williamsburg Is Dead. It looks like Ichiran will be gracing us with its presence. And soon!

Well it’s three months later and it would appear they have taken another (albeit odd) baby step towards opening.

It just gets curiouser and curiouser. In any case anyone interested in registering should make their way down to 1013 Manhattan Avenue without delay and fill out a registration form.
