AKA: Chris Smith, AKA the creator of the above masterpiece which (sans customizations made by yours truly) is (still) available for purchase at the Mark Bar or online by clicking here). You have my eternal gratitude for combining two things of which I am quite fond: the Shit Tits and Bad Brains. This one’s for you, Smitty!

CHEERS

ATTN: Mark Bar Sucks! This place is a coke head infested joint.

UPDATE, 2:30 p.m.: It has been brought to my attention (see comments) that this screed is continued on the other side of the column. Here it is.

P.S.: Today’s offerings will be lite as I have had a cold the last couple days. When not sleeping I have been savoring the teeth rattling din of the street in front of my apartment being ripped up.

AT 7:00 AM IN THE MORNING.

I love the smell of asphalt in the morning.

When I saw the flier for this in the window of t.b.d. yesterday I knew this was going to be on my “to do” list. Now throw in an offer to be one of the “celebrity judges” (imagine that: me, a simple Greenpoint housewife who lives two blocks away from the largest waste treatment plant on the East coast and works at a junk shop. Dreams really do come true folks.) and I was all over this like white on rice. So you can imagine my delight when Lisa, the woman publicizing this event, was kind enough to forward me the press release for this event. Here it is:

THE GREAT GREENPOINT MAC OFF

NEW YORK – Four of Greenpoint’s best bars will be participating in the first Great Greenpoint Mac Off to be held beginning at 4pm on Sunday, March 22nd.  The pub crawl offers customers the opportunity to experience North Brooklyn’s diverse offerings of the comfort food staple, macaroni and cheese, while benefiting from drink specials from each establishment.

Starting at 4pm at Red Star chef, John Manzo serves up his menu’s Mac ‘N Cheese of the day. At its own pace, the crawl moves to The Habitat where chef/owner Ashley Engmann offers samples from their standard menu. Participants then cross the road to The Mark Bar, the tried and true Greenpoint watering hole celebrating its 5th year, where Chef Michael Diprima of Lamb and Jaffey and Dream Cuisine Catering fame serves the group from their all day menu.  The crawl moves one block to t.b.d. Brooklyn to receive a final sample prepared by chef Cody Utzman, owner of local Cali-Mex eatery Papacitos and the soon to open Brooklyn Standard (! — ed. note)

Judging takes place at 8pm at t.b.d. Brooklyn by local celebrity judges giving their own critiques of the fare from each bar while customer voting will determine the winner of the highly coveted title of Greenpoint’s Best Mac & Cheese. Expect hot tempers and tough competition for this good-natured prize. The crowd remains at t.b.d. for the after-party with entertainment provided by local Greenpoint DJs Plant Y Junk.

subtexturethumbThose of you who have eaten at COCO 68 recently probably noticed the art work hanging in the back room. Well, the artist behind these works is Chris Smith and this evening he will be strutting his stuff at our very own Mark Bar! Here are the deets per his press release:

Happy New Year everyone!
Thanks to everyone for your support in the past year, 2009 is already off to a quick start! I’m taking over Brooklyn this month, with my “Roadwork Ahead” series of paintings at 3 locations

Help me celebrate by joining me this Wed at the Mark Bar. They are extending their Economic Bailout Happy Hour until 9pm (that means $3 for almost everything in the bar!!) and be sure to stick around for XXXTreme Bingo at 10pm (yeah you heard me!)

Booze, bingo, art and porn (a bag of which is one of the prizes offered at the Mark Bar’s XXXTreme Bingo Night) : I cannot think of a better way to spend a Wednesday night in Greenpoint!

Closing on an art-related note, some of you might have noticed that the Habitat recently reopened after taking a few days off for vacation. What you might not have noticed is what’s shaking upstairs.

The space is called The Ceeflat

live

…and every Thursday night starting tomorrow, January 15, they’re hosting a live open figure drawing workshop. As it would happen one of my resolutions this year is to bone up on my draftsmanship (What’s the point of having a degree in Painting and Drawing if you don’t, in fact, draw anymore?). The promise of “costumes” and a paltry $15.00 fee will undoubtedly make this resolution easier for yours truly to stick with.
