The Hunchback of Sharon Street

If any of you have the opportunity I strongly recommend you check out Cooper Park. This little known gem is located across the street from the Greenpoint Hospital on Maspeth Avenue between Olive Street and Morgan Avenue. When you go there you will notice that unlike its sister to the north (McCarren) this park is not encircled by condominiums.

What’s more, a short stroll down Orient Avenue will reveal some of the nicest architecture this neighborhood has to offer. And then you have this.

38 Sharon Street

In keeping with the spirit of the times the owner at 38 Sharon Street decided a mere 1,149 square feet one family house was not enough. To this end they decided to erect a second floor.

Or would that be third floor? It is kind of hard to tell. When I looked up the registration for this property on HPD it indicated this was a one story building. Very curious.

But one could argue the semantics of what makes a one or two story building for hours on end to no avail. There is one thing I can assert with 100% certainty: a neighbor of this eyesore is not the least bit happy and has made his (or her) discontentment known to the Department of Buildings.

  2. Funny story about this park. I drive out Maspeth Avenue fairly frequently for my job, and a week or so ago, on one of those unseasonably warm days, I parked on Maspeth to eat my lunch in my car with the windows down. I parked behind what I thought was an unoccupied black sedan, but after I turned off the ignition I noticed it was running. I figured that it was probably another lunch-breaker, no big deal. After I’d been parked there for five minutes or so, another guy parks a van behind me. He gets out of his car. I would describe him visually as a caricature of a middle-aged, Italian, Brooklynite. Gold chain and track suit. He walks past me, and notices me in my car with the radio on, hesitates briefly, but then walks directly towards the sedan. He gets in the BACK SEAT. I’m scratching my noggin then. I finish my lunch and about 15 minutes later pull away. AS SOON AS I pull away, the guy gets out of the back seat and walks back to his van.
I know I probably watch too much “Sopranos” but I couldn’t help but chuckle at this whole ordeal. I wonder if this park will become a less attractive meeting place after all of the condos going up on Maspeth find tenants.

  6. I was walking around there last weekend and did come upon a very large new condo development on Olive Street, about a block from the park:

    oliveparkcondos.com

“Williamsburg’s First Resort-Like Lifestyle Condo in a Picture-Perfect Parkside Setting”!!!

featuring a “chic and sexy lobby” and a “full-time consierge”…

Because that’s what the world needs.

  9. There is a whole horrible string of condos right off that park.

This neighbor–the one making all the complaints–seems insane. You can see that every one of them was investigated and found not viable.
