  2. Maria’s Coffee Shop, really?? 🙁

I have a friend who got a job on LI and is moving to Bklyn (cause really, who wants to live on LI) and the rents have come down but not that much in places like Greenpoint. These people need to get a clue, it’s not 2007-2008 anymore. We need more affordable living/commercial space.

  4. 3 reasons:

the recession… greedy landlords…. and “new residents” do not shop locally… they just sleep here.

greenpoint/ williamsbrug will be losing many other mom and pops in the coming months… on my mail route alone in east williamsburg… there are at least 6 stores closing within the next 3 months.

  6. XDX, you make a key point — new residents do not shop locally. This is frustrating and ironic because from what I’ve seen (I live a block from several new shops and residents), the “new residents” seem to embrace the idea of “shopping local.” But that definition is apparently limited and does not apply to the already thriving local shops all over our neighborhood.

One example is the Standard on Nassau. I actually read a comment on another blog by someone who praised its arrival, noting up til now, Nassau Avenue has been “a wasteland.” Huh? I guess that person doesn’t appreciate the excellent, unique Polish bakeries and restaurants and boutiques that line the street (where bread is made on the spot or just down the street at Syrena or Old Warsaw — how many people live within blocks of where their GROCERY store bread is baked?). I marvel at the Standard’s demographic and wonder if any of the customers there have gone next door to the Old Poland Bakery to sample their lovely breads and hot foods. (I hope they do.)

  8. Hey, this is why we are supposed to welcome new mega development with open arms… it brings great retail opportunities along with it!

  14. i have to agree with CowgirlBlue. i buy syrena’s breads at C-town and the Garden. and they are probably, hands-down, the best-tasting bread – and cheap!- i’ve found yet in a grocery store. when i read on their lablel that it was locally made, it made sense and all the more incentive to keep buying it.

  16. I’ll miss Mr. Misha’s. Where else can I procure knite silver jewelry, knite handicrafts, knite furniture, knite everything? How am I ever going to find out what magical properties ‘knite’-as-modifier confers upon these imported treasures?

…these are the things I used to ponder while waiting for the B61. RIP Mr. Misha’s.
