  2. Dear Miss Heather,
I would not want to mislead the garden’s curious public by any implication that the volunteer members of Red Gate aka Nick’s Garden “planted” this tree. Most likely, a defecating bird propagated the cherry pit. We noticed it growing, protected it, 1 year later could actually TELL what it was; and now 6 years later, she made some fruit.

Which we won’t eat. Because that would be both illegal and unhealthy. McCarren Park is located on brownfield. What I found out is not illegal, is for me to render aid to some trees in the park around the garden that need reviving (if possible). I am honestly thrilled to say my endeavor as a tree steward would be appreciated by our park. I am glad, because dying plants bring out the Florence Nightingale in me. I LOVE a fixer-upper! So watering a few new plantings isn’t exactly the vigilante justice I would render to “my favorite tree”, the old cherry on the corner, but it’s a start. I would like to get a permit from the park’s horticulturist to treat it, but that isn’t as simple as just freakin’ doing it.

Would you set up defense fund for me, if I “doctor’ 2 sick trees that I know need Rx, and to repair their fences ? It would be a punishable offense, if pursued. I am hoping that they might actually appreciate the help. I am gonna roll with that. Thanks for posting the cherry shot, and for all your support for the garden.

  4. Some years before Nick’s Garden ( now Red Gate Garden ) was created, there was a small grove of fruit trees in that area. I don’t remember if they were cherry trees, but I wouldn’t be suprised if the seedling had been there all along and just didn’t have the nurturing to grow.

  6. The garden is truly an oasis of little botanical successes. In spite of all the brownfield terra, a polluted water table approximately 10-15 feet below the surface, “new” shadows from the condos across the street, gallons of urine, trash, willful destruction of Park property, large amounts of charcoal barbecuing smoking out the trees; Red Gate (Nick’s Garden) is a daily reassurance that in spite of it all, green can survive. I am so grateful that some people find value in that fact. In a few minds it might be better to have a Shake Shack on that corner paying 100s of thousands of dollars to have a “venue” there to provide concessions to park goers and to generate park revenue. My opinion is that we have already paid for our park, and we continue to fund it annually with our taxpaying dollars. Yes, there are plenty of expenses in operating a city park. Here’s how Memorial Day weekend panned out on McCarren Park’s payroll. Since there were ZERO trash cans at the southeast end of the soccer field, and at least 3 dozen bbq’s in that area over the long weekend and the park wasn’t even begun to be cleaned until thursday morning; parks spent how much extra to clean it? There must be a point where sanitary, basic needs be serviced. That some weirdos steal the trash cans is a major suckfest, I am sure. But you gotta get some more (read:like 6 months ago). All of the civic organizations that work so diligently to improve parks need to demand of themselves, and NYC Parks administration to prioritize improving basic park’s amenities, before they set their sights on new projects or grandiose revitalization projects. We need to stop accepting unacceptable rationalizarions for a lack of trash cans, water fountains, and bathrooms. The magnanimous civic organizations that work so ferociously to monetize/improve parks need to re-prioritize; and get back to some basics first. Preferably, tomorrow. There’s a big craft fair. The good part of it is, is no one will urinate in public until after sun down. What a perk.
