Urban Fur: What’s In A Name?

When I saw this handsome face peering out of the newly face-lifted Franchesca Mini Market I simply had to make his acquaintance.

As you can see he is quite a friendly fellow. So much so I inquired as to this urban lion’s name. “Sueno” is what I was told. I noted this meant “dream” or “sleep” Spanish to wit they noted:

We named him that because he sleeps all the time.

I guess I caught him resting between naps!

Spotted At 1074 Manhattan Avenue: No Blablazo

This morning I was distraught to see that the El Blablazo tree pit, a pre-eminent piece of north ‘Point pride was no more. I asked a gentleman on the premises what gives. He explained to me that individuals from the Greenpoint Hotel and the adjoining 3/4 house had taken patronizing said seating late at night. They were becoming a nuisance (READ: loitering, leaving trash and drug paraphernalia for which the owner of 1074 Manhattan Avenue was fined by the Department of Sanitation) so they had no other choice but to remove it. Follows are a few images from the better days of El Blablazo.

Greenpoint Photos du Jour: Wet Paint

It would appear that the chaps responsible for the Garden Spot glory that is the “El Blablazo” tree pit have seen fit to give it a little sprucing up in anticipation of this upcoming holiday weekend! Great job, guys!

P.S.: Special thanks go out to Laura Hofmann who not only tipped me off to this, but also took the first photo gracing this post!

While not exclusively American, I cannot think of a better way to give a nod to Memorial Day (and all things red, white and blue) than the new and improved El Blablazo tree pit. Great job guys!

New York Shitty Day Ender: El Blablazo

Today as the Mister and I were walking to Animal Planet to purchase some cat food we noticed a flurry of activity at the El Blablazo tree. Something was clearly up, so we went in for a closer look.

I asked the man presiding over the sceneĀ  if they were prepping for Puerto Rican Day (which is coming soon). He enthusiastically answered to the affirmative.

This is awesome.

New York Shitty Day Ender: A Street Fair on Manhattan Avenue?

January 12, 2010 ·

Although this is (obviously) a ways off I wanted to bring it to your attention anyway: any and all who would like to see a street fair this summer should head to 1018 Manhattan Avenue (AKA: The Greenpoint Grocery) and sign the petition. The proposed date for the “Greenpoint Hispanic Festival” is August 8, 2010 and the location will be Manhattan Avenue between Green and Dupont Street. I for one would love to see this happen. If you do too head over to 1018 and grace this petition with your John Hancock!

Greenpoint Street Seating Du Jour: Added Value

1079

The street seating (a partially disassembled office chair) in the above photograph is the least interesting thing going on here.

Rather, it is this objet d’art that caught my eye. Upon closer inspection I noticed it has been wired for some hitherto unknown purpose and sports a chain for easy hanging. If this is your sort of thing (and you know who you are) head over to 1079 Manhattan Avenue and pick it up. Just don’t complain to me if this creation blows your fuse box or gives you some unwanted houseguests!

P.S.: While I am on vaguely the subject of trees, the El Blablazo community Christmas tree is looking pretty fabulous nowadays!

Many more ornaments have been added.

Someone has even added a teddy bear. Too cute!

When I brought this to the attention of the creator of the tree pit that started it all at 1071 Manhattan Avenue, he was non-plussed:

Now you can’t sit on the bench.

Me: I think it is rather nice. I even hung a few ornaments on it myself and gave him some Christmas lights. We have no room whatsoever for a tree. I really like the fact they have created a community tree we can all add to enjoy. I’m certain after the holiday they will dismantle it and people can sit on it again.

Ever since he heard about you putting our tree pit on the Internet he has been trying to impress you.

He said. To wit I replied:

I am impressed! By the way, I like the backrest you added to your bench.

The 1071 Tree Pit Man: Thanks. The women were complaining about it being uncomfortable so I added it. I want people to be comfortable.

Methinks the rivalry heating up!
