From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: A Question About Khims

L (who sent the above photographs) writes:

My boyfriend and I were picking up some snacks at the Khim’s Millennium Market on Driggs Avenue this afternoon, and after getting about halfway through our sesame sticks, he noticed that the label looked a little….thick. So, he started to peel back the top label, et voila, there was another underneath! But where the first had a “packed on” date of 05.08.10 and “sell by” date of 08.05.10, the second was packed on March 8th, to be sold by May 6th! And it came from a different store location, the one on Graham Avenue. Going for broke, he started to peel back the second label to find YET ANOTHER ONE. Turns out these snacks were originally packed back on January 14th, with a sell-by date of March 14th. This, too, was from Graham Avenue. (Interestingly, the ingredients, weight, and prices change with each sticker.) Now, we know that “sell by” and “expiration” dates aren’t the same thing, and these crackers clearly hadn’t gone bad–they weren’t even stale. Still, “sell by” should mean “sell by“, right? Maybe there’s a reasonable explanation for this…but we took pictures anyway, and thought we’d send them in.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is they’re reusing the packaging. I have no idea if this practice is legal or not but the implications are pretty disturbing. Thoughts, anyone?

  2. Hmm, being the boyfriend in question in the above email, I have to say it’s pretty unlikely they are reusing the packaging. I had to rip off that sealed tab, though it’s possible that they pulled it up from the inside edge of the other side, i was unable to do so without leaving it bent in a way that would make it obvious that it was previously opened.

The other details are that the dates for the stickers above come right around the time of expiration of the previous sticker, which would be prime re-stickering time. So you know, kind of nasty. Except that I’m still eating them. They’re very very addictive.

Another interesting note is that the weight went up by .01 lbs each time, so I guess they are aware of the weight of each sticker, and also charging you for it.

Really though, the reason I pulled up the sticker was because the ingredients on the top sticker were “sugar, sodium dioxide” and I was like, well there’s got to be some sesame in there, maybe they ran out of space on a sticker underneath. So I started pulling. And pulling.

  6. Don’t know if this is relevant, but the Graham Ave. Khims looks like it is out of business.

  12. i am getting so tired of them!

    a) they constantly try to overcharge you. as their exorbitant prices weren’t bad enough, i’m always catching them adding on a dollar or 50 cents to the price printed on the stickers.

    b) i was in there the other day, buying fage greek yogurt. 200 ml = $1.99, 500 ml = $6.49. what other store do you know that charges more for a single container than it would cost to buy the same amount in smaller ones?!

    ugh, only in an emergency

  14. This place is seriously overpriced. Not sure why anybody would willingly shop here. Everything is literally at least $1 more than it should cost. Everything is even more marked up than Rachel’s on Nassau Avenue, which I didn’t think was possible.
