Well, it did fall.

The previous slide show beautifully illustrates the ineptitude of the Department of Buildings (lest I have not made it clear already*) comes courtesy of Lesterhead. With public servants like this, who needs enemies?

You can peruse complaints leading up to this incident including these gems dating from May 1, 2009

Miss Heather

*And of course there is my personal favorite: 156 India Street. You were (and are) really on top of that one, Department of Buildings! Hence why the Red Cross was brought in.

P.S.: For those of you who are curious (or homeless as a consequence of this) 493 Myrtle Avenue LLC can be reached here.

  2. That is appalling. Every chance in the world to prevent the collapse, and the DOB did nothing. Of course.

  4. They’re damned lucky no one died. Inexcusable.

  6. They are Day-Am Lucky no one died. Clinton Hill always had some problem with crappy masonry renovations. When I lived there from 79 til 92, every summer at least two guys would die from over-digging a foundation or doing the Curly “hey what’s this post for?” and collapse a building on themselves. Its an expensive neighborhood with people not understanding why these buildings have stood for so long and how fragile they really are. It looks like this time the owner really cared, but the building was not feeling so good no more.

This particular building had some special meaning for me. When the bar below was once a neighborhood watering hole called Dotties Roumanian Gardens, this was my hangout when I wasn’t at the LES. I even met my future wife there. I was talking to my friend Bob who still lives over there about this collapse and the building on the other side of the empty lot that fell in 20 years ago. Another bit of our history returns to dust. RIP Dotties/Gardens/Vespers.
