Miss Heather,

I want to help a community school in Williamsburg (public school not a charter), by bringing attention to their novel approach to learning…Shop class.  It doesn’t sound that incredible, but in a city with dwindling budgets and a narrow focus on the test results, the new and improved shop class gives students an opportunity to engage with math, science, and English, as well as a chance to make a difference in the community.  The projects help other city-based non-profits by building rainwater collection systems, garden shelters, tool sheds, and benches.

The teachers have found that in this integrated learning process, students make tangible, real-world connections with their academic learning; develop practical skills and a sense of craft; connect with community members in various New York City neighborhoods and serve their needs; understand issues of environmental, economic and social justice facing New York City communities; gain a clear sense of accomplishment; and value teamwork.

Urban Workshop is fundraising for 2011 and need all the help they can get.  If people want to donate: https://www.justgive.org/basket?acton=donate&ein=27-2783169
