So It Goes…

Xtra Discount Deceased

as Kurt Vonnegut would say.

Greenpoint lost a much-needed houseware store.

Woo Hoo WaMu!

And by all appearances, it would appear a bank is slated to take its place. This will make three banks on one block: CitiBank, Dime Bank and WaMu. Needless to say this achievement will be duly noted on Gentrification Bingo.

Miss Heather

P.S.: Could someone please explain to me why banks have not seen fit to open shop north of Greenpoint Avenue?

  2. This may not mean that it will be an actual WaMu bank, however. Often, banks will come to an area, open shop and buy up entire blocks of buildings. The WaMu logo on the back of the blueprints may simply mean that the new store is funded / owned by Washington Mutual. We’ll have to see.

  4. While I am happy to finally have my bank closer to home, It was depressing to walk down Manhattan last weekend and see all the closed / closing stores. I’d rather have a few too many dollar stores than banks.

  6. You know the economy is bad when the big banks are buying up the smaller ones. Greenpoint Bank became North Fork in 2005. North Fork is now owned by Capital One. You’d think that would mean they’d hire more tellers and improve service, but you’d be wrong.

I was in line last month when some elderly ladies came close to rioting because the bank was “all out of $100 bills.” One hip granny said “Whadaya mean you’re out of money? You’re a bank; you ain’t the damn grocery store.” The guards were getting nervous. The situation was resolved when the eight to ten of us in line (2 tellers working) came to the woman’s aid and traded large bills for her small ones.

  8. Banks don’t open North of Greenpoint Ave because it’s too brown. Banks like white.

That was my fave dollar store.
