Hit & Run In Greenpoint: Witnesses Wanted

Apparently this has been making the rounds on Facebook but I spied the above flier on Nassau Avenue this afternoon. If ant of you, dear readers, or anyone you know witnessed this horrible incident (which came to pass at Calyer and Franklin Street) please shoot an email to the above-listed email address. Let’s help catch these folks!

    3. I have no idea. Regardless, leaving the scene of an accident is reprehensible.

    6. That’s a tough intersection, starting at Oak, with some hard to see spots. I never feel comfortable riding my bike on Franklin over there and even when I’m moving my car off Oak, I can’t see the cars speeding up & down Franklin. I hope those people will be okay and that they find some witnesses.

    7. Not to make light of the accident but it’s spelled “someone” not “somone”. Whoever wrote the flier should have proofread for errors and maybe grammar. I’m not good at checking grammar so I can’t blame them for it.

    I do hope they get better soon and catch whoever hit them.

    8. When someone is profoundly upset (in this case: the person who made this flier) such oversights should be forgiven. The point got across and that is what is important. What is *more* important is someone left the scene of an accident.

    10. My only concern about this – I do not mean to nitpick – is that it’s Franklin STREET. Franklin Avenue is in another part of Brooklyn. The only reason this matters is that they are very much not the same street =(

    That is a terrible corner. People come screeching down the street after the traffic light at the curve, and then the other curve at calyer makes visibility difficult. People go way, way too fast down Franklin St. Additionally, there is a sense of false security for cyclists because it is a SHARED LANE. Many bicyclists think they can ride two abreast or that it is a dedicated lane and it is not. This is not the first bike accident that I have heard of on this corner – saw a car service vehicle take out a bicyclist a few months ago right there.

    We were in Manhattan that night or we would have heard something. It is right near the Diamond – I cannot believe that no one there heard or saw anything.

    11. That is indeed a difficult intersection. Calyer Street is one-way traffic only, but travels one-way East and one-way West from either side of the street, meaning that there is no traffic on Calyer that crosses Franklin, and accordingly, the light on Franklin is almost permanently green, opening Franklin up as a speedway.

    Add to it that trucks frequently use Calyer street as an illegal shortcut to get to Manhattan Avenue and it’s not a good situation.

    As a point of clarification, it would nice if those seeking witnesses were able to specify whether this accident happened on “Friday Night” (ie. just after 12:00 AM on 10/23) or on “Saturday Night” (ie. just after 12:00 AM on 10/24). My guess is that it happened on the former.
