A person we’ll call “C” writes:

We found this cat in front of our home yesterday. She’s friendly and loving, so she must belong to someone. We are in Greenpoint on Oak Street. She has hurt her back leg. She’s living in our house at the moment taking up residence on my daughter’s bed. Please share this so if her family is looking for her they can find her here.

Anyone who knows to him this lass belongs— or wants to give her a forever home should contact her good Samaritan via email at Diva54 (at) earthlink (dot) net

Thanks!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Missing On Monitor

Jay (who took the above photograph) writes:

Saw your post yesterday regarding removal of street covers (or whatever they’re called) by metal scrappers. This hole on monitor has appeared not once but three times over the past year thanks to the practice of selling ‘scrap’ for $. My question is why are the scrap metal dealers taking a variety of objects that are obviously NOT scrap? I’m sure you’ve seen the memorials that have been stripped of bronze plaques. I won’t even get in to the copper wire thief who started the Great Greenpoint Terminal fire of ’06. That’s a whole ‘nother ball of molten metal.

The culpability (or not) of the man charged for starting our (not so) little barbecue aside, Jay makes a good point: these items would not be stolen (and resold) if someone wasn’t buying them. Then the becomes question is who— and what do we do about it?

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: A Halloween Inquiry

A lady named Chris writes:

Hi Miss Heather,
Love your blog! Read it all the time and I feel that it is very funny, yet a great service to the community so Thank You for doing it!

My question for today is: You highlight so many houses in the Pernt that are decked out for Halloween. I am now wondering if you have compiled a list of the top houses to hit for this big day? I tried searching on your site but didn’t have much luck. Maybe I am searching the wrong phrase? I tried “Halloween decorations”.

Any advice would be much appreciated and thanks again!

As it would happen I was out and about today documenting Greenpoint’s best ghoulish goodness. Before I proceed to the “winners” (so to speak) here is a slide show showcasing genuine Greenpoint Halloween goodness as spotted by yours truly. Enjoy!

And now onto my picks!

216 North Henry Street: While sporting a small front yard, they make excellent use of it!

This house on Beadel Street: I did not get the address. However, it packs a nice punch and crossing Vandervoort Avenue in order to view it is rather horrifying its own right!

Best Block: Without question this distinction goes to Hausman Street. Watch the following slide show and learn why!

And last— but hardly least— we have the usual suspects: 648 Humboldt Street and 97 Russell Street. I have to say Beverly (the lovely lady responsible for the latter) outdid herself this year. Mazel tov!

Other haunted houses worth a visit: 85 Calyer Street and 57 Franklin Street. I hope this was helpful, Chris. Have a very happy (and safe) Halloween Garden Spotters!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: A McGuinness Boulevard Mystery

A lady named Laura (who took the above photographs) writes:

Hi Heather!
I’ve been noticing that the metal plates near each of the fire hydrants along McGuiness Blvd. are disappearing. Between Greenpoint Ave and Dupont St. alone, there are five of them missing on the West side of  the boulevard. I’ll bet they’re being taken to be sold as scrap metal. Some of the property owners seem to putting in wooden replacements. There’s more missing on the East side of the boulevard. What’s next, the hydrants?
I cannot honestly say I have seen this. However, suspecting these items were sold for scrap metal is not as far-fetched as it may seem: at a recent 94th Precinct Community Council meeting it was noted by some fellow Greenpointers that the caps from fire hydrants on Monitor Street were disappearing. It was concluded these were probably procured and sold as scrap by some of our more, how should we say, entrepreneurial citizens. Thoughts/theories, anyone?

Happy Halloween From New York Shitty!

This oldie but goody hails from Humboldt Street (and dates from 2007) but I could not resist reposting it because it is (still) the most AWESOME jack o’ lantern arrangement I have ever seen. Let us now proceed to eat, drink and be very scary on this— yours trulys very favorite day of the year— Garden Spotters!
