From The New York Shitty Inbox: Are You An Artist?

This was the subject line of the press release I received from the folks at Arts@Renaissance this afternoon. Needless to say I simply had to see what this was about. I’m glad I did!

On December 2, our community will come together to celebrate our creativity. 100 artists will share their vision of North Brooklyn through 4×6 postcards made specially for the event.

And we want you to be a part of it!

There are many ways to get involved, as an artist, as a volunteer, and as a supporter of our burgeoning creative community. Each piece will be sold at auction on December 2 to benefit Arts@Renaissance, the innovative new arts space run by St. Nicks Alliance. You can make a piece, spread the word, or donate funds to make it all happen. Tickets go on sale shortly!

Are you an artist?

Please consider donating your own postcard. There are full details on how to submit here. The only parameters are that the piece be 4×6 and reference North Brooklyn.

This is great opportunity for north Brooklyn artists (and there are many!) to strut their stuff for a good cause. Check it out!

Now At McCarren Park: The Punk Rock Drunk Bench

Per this group’s apparent leader, a nice (if inebriated) chap named Russell (with whom I had a most fascinating conversation after his crew decided to get some shut-eye after breaking into a rollicking cover of Parliament’s Give Up The Funk*), that is what this particular piece of public furniture is called. Why, you ask? I suspect the reason is apparent, however, it should be noted that Russell added that no drugs are allowed. So there have you.

P.S.: Russell also inquired of yours truly (after asking if I would let him take a shower at my apartment in exchange for house-cleaning services):

You look familiar. Did you squat a few years ago?

I do not make this stuff up, folks.

*Which is, curiously enough, not punk rock music.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Very Special Reader Request

A woman we’ll call “J” writes:

Miss Heather, Great postings on the NewYorkShitty website! My mother and uncle were born 70+ years ago in Greenpoint and spent most of their childhood on the 3rd floor of 147 North 7th Street. Next time you are in that area, would you please be so kind as to take a picture of that building now? That would be such a great surprise for them! Most appreciated…

we dialogued a bit and “J” added:

They also went to the Russian Orthodox church on N 12th… I know it (147 N0rth 7 Street— Ed. Note) will be nothing as they remembered. I could not find any pics on realtor sites (the building sold in 2010 for $990,000) or Google, so my fingers are crossed!!!

I’ll be perfectly honest: when I headed down North 7 Street I my heart sank. Especially when I figured out the infamous “finger” building (which, as many recall, was truncated from 20 stories to 10) graced the block in question:

But 147 North 7th Street still stands— albeit in the shadow of its rather “big” friend.

Here it is!

And the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration is (still) splendid as always!

This post is for you and yours, “J”!

LAST GASP: 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting & Community Board 1’s Parks Subcommittee Meeting

Both are set to happen the evening of October 11th! Am I the only person who would like to see greater coordination/communication between our Community Board, the Police Department and other community “groups”  so as to prevent overlaps like this? Why should we Greenpointers be forced to, for example, pick and choose between learning more about the tragic (and I suspect preventable) suicide which came to pass at McGolrick Park and what’s on Community Board 1 Parks Subcommittee’s agenda (which happens to be pretty Garden Spot-centric):

1. Presentation on Improvements/Renovation for Cooper Park – by Mr Martin Maher, Chief of Staff/Brooklyn – Parks Department, and Ms. Portia Cook-Dyrenforth, Capital Projects, Brooklyn – Parks Department
2. Proposed Green Thumb Interim Use For 59 Java Street – by Mr. Jack Hammer, NYC HPD.
3. Pathways of McCarren Park – Project status discussion.

In any case, make/take your choice, Greenburgers:
