Dung Of The Day: Glass Half Full Edition
After learning about the latest incarnation of this sign last week I simply had to see it for myself. What’s more I wanted to gauge its effectiveness. I have some good news and some bad news to relay:
1. While on the one hand it would appear the local citizenry are obeying the letter of the sign,
2. on the other they do not seem to be grasping its spirit.
Glass half empty or glass half full? I’ll let you make the call.
While I’m on the subject of dog shit and day-glo paint, I was recently forwarded a most amusing item from my friend over at And I am Not Lying. Here’s a teaser to pique your interest:
There were two good things about my apartment in Virginia:
The rent was only $175 a month, and Brad the landlord never came over. Ever. Or so we thought. This seemed ideal at the time, as I was using the living room as a painting space in addition to training live chickens to play keyboards in the living room. The less company, the better.
But like so much else in the world, the good and bad parts of that situation were horribly entangled.
We’d moved into the place in a hurry in the dead of an unusually cold winter – which served to keep the smell down..
Yup, and it only gets better.

East Williamsburg Photos Du Jour: Street Seating
The delectable and downright brilliant bit of ad hoc street seating hails (as many other wonderful and creative uses of tires do) from Bogart Street in “East Williamsburg”. Not only does it look stylish but I can personally attest to the fact it is also quite comfortable.
There is only one word to describe a creation as sublime as this: GENIUS.

Boobification Photo Du Jour: Racked At The Gutter
Yesterday a few of my friends and I whiled away the day bowling. We paid for two hours thinking (in our naivete) they’d let us finish the second round. They didn’t. They cut us off. Nonetheless before they tossed us out my buddy over at Bad Advice achieved her dream: cracking 100.
You’re a 300 (or whatever they consider to be a perfect score) in my book! As are the other wonderful Greenpoint, Williamsburg, “East” Williamsburg friends who ventured out to celebrate my birthday. Thank you!
Otherwise I saw fit to leave my calling card at the Gutter. I like to call it “Racked In Black”.

Fillmore Place, Revisited

Shortly after writing this post I received an email from my buddy over at Brooklyn11211. In a nutshell this missive stated that this block was on the docket to become landmarked. At the time (and I mean no disrespect to my colleague when I write this) I thought to myself:
That’s fine and dandy. Let’s see if it really happens.
In other words: I’ll believe it when I see it. Actions speak louder than words. Especially when one lives in an area where a number of noteworthy buildings have been needlessly and careless razed.
Well yesterday I received an email from the Waterfront Preservation Alliance of Greenpoint & Williamsburg. It was entitled “Fillmore Place Calendaring at Landmarks on Tuesday” and it read as follows:

TONIGHT: A Couple Of Art-Related Events
Although this is last minute I cannot resist passing along this item. This evening starting at 6:00 p.m. Deitch Projects and the Burleqsue Hall of Fame will be ushering a show featuring the art of Liz Renay (who some of you may recall was the star of John Water’s hilariously abject film Desperate Living). Here’s the scoop from Deitch’s web site:
Deitch Projects and the Burlesque Hall of Fame present “How To Attract Men” a retrospective exhibit of the art of Liz Renay. Pre-pop , Pre-punk, and an outsider on the inside- Liz Renay created her own reality and an enormous body of work along the way including four books, three dozen films and miles of printed publicity. In the first New York showing of her paintings in fifty years, Deitch Projects 76 Grand Street gallery will feature original paintings as well as a salon of important collages, costumes, and artifacts from Ms. Renay’s archives in the Burlesque Hall of Fame.
Liz’s life story weaves itself through almost every American subculture during her life time-burlesque, the Hollywood studio system, television, rock and roll, sexploitaion and punk films, the mafia and women’s prison. She precipitated and participated in the sexual revolution. Through it all she created a large body of paintings and art. This work would seem unbelievable if created by any other artist- but in the case of Liz Renay, it is a direct reflection of a life as art.
This is a must-see event (especially for my buddy Bitchcakes— you hear me out there?). Check it out!
