TOMORROW: Free Spirits (In More Ways Than One)

January 17, 2009 ·

As promised here are a couple of events for those of you looking for something to do tomorrow.

First up, Apartment Show will be hosting their first group show entitled “Free Spirits”.

freespiritinvite

Perhaps I have lived in Greenpoint too long but when I first saw the title of this event I thought free booze was in the offering. It isn’t: this event is (as the above invitation clearly states) strictly B.Y.O.B. This is not to suggest this isn’t worth checking out (it looks very interesting). These folks might want to be a little more prudent with their use of the word “free” in their ad copy.

APARTMENT SHOW!
January 18, 2008, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m.
790 Manhattan Avenue #2R
Brooklyn, New York 11222

Those of you who are interested in free suds might find the following of interest.

Starting at 9:00 p.m. Glasslands will be hosting a fundraiser for the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project. What is the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project, you ask? Here are the deets per their press release:

The mission of the Memorial Project is to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by leading a project to create a memorial to honor his national and international contributions to world peace through non-violent social change.

We want to use this event to remind people that without the tireless efforts of civil rights activists like Martin Luther King Jr., (as well as those who came before and after him) we might not able to celebrate Obama’s historic inauguration. So let’s party in honor of the fulfillment of Martin Luther King’s dream!

Michael Patrick of Designer Drugs, as well as DJ Mannes and Steve Lurkel of PennedMadness.com are slated to perform and Elle Rex will be on hand to work her photographic magic. Those of you who are interested in attending should RSVP via email at: Ihaveabeat@gmail.com. If you do you’ll save $5.00. Otherwise the cover at the door will set you back $12.00.

I HAVE A BEAT
January 18, 9:00 p.m. – 4:00 a.m.

In closing I have to say that exactly how the purpose of this fundraiser can be reconciled with a free hour of Colt 45 is beyond me. It strikes me as being a bit tasteless. Then again I suspect many of the folks who will be attending this event are not old enough to remember gems like this.

But I suppose free beer for a good cause is better than no beer.

Greenpoint Video Du Jour: Thursday Afternoon At The Junk Shop

January 15, 2009 ·

secretthumb(Or: George Diaz Sounds Off About “The Secret”)

The one thing I have noticed proliferating at an alarming rate in the junk shop of late is self-help paraphernalia. Perhaps this is a sign of the times or a sad testament to the American collective consciousness? Or both? All I know is if this mind-boggling array of print material, audio cassettes and compact discs do what they profess the solution to most of life’s problems— be it penile enlargement enhancement, accumulating wealth, letting go of dysfunctional relationships, finding true love, and yes, unlearning narcissistic behavior— can be found at The Thing. Or more accurately: its dumpster.

I mention the previous because last week I happened upon this screencap of a review for “The Secret” via one of my Flickr contacts, Gubatron. I liked it so much I had to share it with my buddy Larry da Junkman. He too was impressed by its Mark Twain-meets-Ambrose Bierce variety of wit.

Now jump forward to today.

The weather was downright brutal and as a consequence things were pretty slow at the junk shop. We secured our respective lunches and a round table slowly coalesced. This forum of Greenpointerati included yours truly, Larry (da Junkman), and George Diaz. First we discussed neighborhood affairs (and in so doing tackled the problem of what to do with the glut of vacant condominiums here: rent them under the pretext of doing a one day film shoot and refuse to leave and/or employ them as high-end brothels).

Eventually, as is often the case, our conversation came around to the subject of prison. That’s when Larry and I decided to share the good news about “The Secret” with George. Hilarity ensued.

To close on a (somewhat) related note I was recently approached by George to do a show on his Internet radio station Llegamos. Initially I thought he was out of his friggin’ mind but after having given the matter some thought I am coming around to the idea. Provided of course I can get a word in edge-wise with this wise guy. We’ll see what happens.

Lastly, I would remiss if I didn’t share this curious Greenpoint factoid: “The Secret” is a very popular rental at our local video store!

TOMORROW: Inflatable Art & More

January 15, 2009 ·
Filed under: Bushwick, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg

There is going to be a number of wonderful ways to while away this upcoming three day weekend here in north Brooklyn. Follows are a couple of art-related events I found of particular interest scheduled for tomorrow, January 16th. Give one (or both) of  ’em a whirl!

inflatableart

Tomorrow, January 16, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. 3rd Ward will be hosting a one-night exhibition of inflatable sculpture. In addition to a 3,000 square foot space teeming with air-filled goodness live music by DJ Tanner, complementary drinks and a crash course on how to make your own inflatable art work is promised. I for one think this sounds like a LOT of fun. If you think so too you should RSVP via email at events (at) 3rdward (dot) com.*

3rd Ward
195 Morgan Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11237

hiddenpeople

Next up, Hidden People and a few friends will be performing at Papa B Studios. The incredibly wallet-friendly $3.00 cover fee will not only buy you an evening of musical entertainment, but you’ll also get to savor the photographic stylings of Jonathan Fasulo. I’m not certain if this one man show will feature any work from his “mustached babies” series, but for a mere three bucks it’s well worth making the trek to find out!

Papa B Studios
907 Broadway
Brooklyn, New York 11206

Stay tuned, I have more Martin Luther King weekend goodness to share!

Anyone Seen Dakota?

The details on this flier are scant but its timing and location is very interesting. Will this family receive a voice mail demanding reward money for their beloved pet’s return? I certainly hope not— but in light of recent events I am not terribly optimistic.
