Manhole Patrol: 11/14/2011

While my site has been eerily quiet on the subject the past few days I can assure you, gentle readers, I have been keeping a vigilant watch over our community’s plundered manholes access covers. Without further ado, here are a few more!

McGuinness Boulevard, between Greenpoint Avenue and Calyer Street, East Side

I appear to have missed these two the first time around. For those of you keeping count, this make twelve such missing covers on McGuinness Boulevard.

Marcy Avenue at Hope Street, 11211

Representing Williamsburg, we have this specimen which hails a mere hop-skip from the entrance to the Brooklyn Queens Expressway! And getting back to unfinished business…

49 Noble Street (between West and Franklin Street)

Noble btwn Franklin and West, not sure if you got this one already. another one down the block filled with water but my photo didn’t come out!

Duly noted! What’s more I felt a fit of artistic inspiration just down the block. More specifically: I decided to put the “man” back in manhole!

In closing, I’d like to note that this phenomenon (the commandeering of public property for sale as scrap) has not gone unnoticed by a colleague of mine in Queens. In fact, today he authored a blog post of his own on the subject. Give it a read!

Spotted On McGuinness Boulevard: Stop The Speedway

Today as I was strolling past the scene of our latest traffic-related fatality, Calyer Street at McGuinness Boulevard, I stumbled upon this item. Intrigued, I checked out the url listed on this sticker upon arriving home. I would strongly advise each and every one of my fellow Greenpointers to do the same.

There you will find the above online petitions and a number of statistics which are quite disturbing. For example: in the course of 8 hours 150 red light violations were observed and 114 failures to yield to pedestrians were observed. Check it out.

Eugene: Mott Haven Bronx

This second portrait was taken by Chris Arnade, who writes:

Eugene was panhandling and drinking outside of a Bodega. Homeless, he sleeps either inside the Bodega or in a shelter. He only drinks beer, “never having done any of that other stuff.” The owner of the store tells me he would “trust Eugene with his life, he is the most loyal man I know.” When I asked Eugene about the crown, he said its to show the world that his parents are with him, souls who live in his heart.

Williamsburg Photos du Jour: 184 North 8 Street

Some time ago a proposal was made— and approved— for a variance to be granted for 184 North 8 Street so a martial arts studio reside in this long-neglected (and often squatted) building. As you can see from the above photographs (which were taken this weekend) this facility is beginning to happen and we’re getting a rather lovely mural to boot! You can view an image of the completed product by clicking here.
