Tony writes at 5:39 p.m.:

an apparent blown manhole cover in front of chopin chemists on manhattan ave. ten min. ago i heards a boom and the lights dimmed and flickered. it appears that no one was hurt.

To wit I replied:

I tell you when the CHUDs finally decide to come above ground here is where they’re going to do it. What’s more, no one will notice!

Another reader named David noticed today’s excitement. What’s more he took photographs. He writes at 6:13 p.m.:

maybe 20 mins ago or so.  from my vantage point it seems a manhole explosion.  police/fire response was quick, under 5 min.

  2. Yeah, I was in the dry cleaners and the lights flickered. I made a joke with the lady about ghosts, and then the second I stepped outside, BOOM!!! I jumped about 50 feet!!
People started running away, a car alarm went off, and black smoke was pouring out of somewhere. (Apparently the manhole.) I believe I saw pieces of a car on the sidewalk.
The police and fire dept. were there in minutes, and closed off the street.
I went back to check it out about 15 minutes later and all the cars were gone and there was a big piece of metal (maybe the manhole cover frame?) in front of the eye glasses place.
I thought it might have been related to Starbucks, but I doubt it.
Luckily, it looks like no body got hurt, even the people who were standing directly next to it.
