As rents continue to be prohibitively out-of-reach for small businesses we can anticipate more and more chain stores and franchises gracing Manhattan Avenue. Like this new Subway slated for 650 Manhattan Avenue. My advice: if you want a sandwich go to Boneshakers, The God Bless Deli or the Franklin Corner Store. They’re well worth it.

  2. not sure how it is in greenpoint, but on the northside, its the small businesses bleeding people. it is a lot cheaper to shop in manhattan. ie. a six pack of sapporo at sunrise mart is $6, whole foods is tons cheaper than any veg-type grocery store here, and in many cases cheaper than c-town. williamsburg used to be cheaper than manhattan. i feel bad saying it, but i wish more corporations would set up here – maybe it would get affordable again.

  4. are they closing the hersey/subway already open? or moving to a new space?

cheaper shopping in manhattan? i dont know what store you shop at, but c-town and associated is damn cheap… and any of the local polish shops are cheap too.

  6. please move to manhattan than… we dont need giant box stores in greenpoint.

plenty of the local deli’s are cheap, and the local groceries are cheap.. in fact organic food is cheaper at the garden, than at key food.

williamsburg is over… it will never change back.. save greenpoint from the same fate.

shop locally and support your local community…

  8. I don’t have huge problems supporting a franchise – those are often locally “owned” by working people/families in the neighborhood who may have selected to go for a known name rather than start from scratch. So in a way, you still are supporting locals/the community, though not as ideal as a true mom and pop.
