Greenpoint Photo du Jour: The Corner Frenzy

This afternoon as I was strolling by the Corner Frenzy I wondered to myself:

Gee, I wonder if they’re serving ice cream yet?

Luckily for me (and north ‘Point ice cream lovers), the bad-ass lass who presides over this establishment, Miriam, was out front. I asked her if they were selling the cold stuff. She said not just yet. Those of you who want to get your sweet-tooth on will have to wait until after they come back from vacation: April 12th, 2012. So there have you!

Spotted On Greenpoint Avenue: Hooliganism

After I took the above photograph a gentleman who works at this establishment asked me what I was doing. Given the relations between this business and its neighbors (especially those residing in the condominium next door) are “chilly”, I decided a direct (but light) approach was in order.

Someone has affixed a middle-aged balding man to your building.

I said. The man looks up. I added:

That’s Phil Collins.

This observation, for reasons not completely clear, precipitated a fit of impish laughter from his person. He thought this was really funny.

Perhaps, as the sign indicates they are in a new line of work: Live Poultry Laughter? In any case I spied a few new/modified Phils while passing at the Greenpoint Avenue entrance of G train shortly thereafter.

Although the fez is amusing…

I, as a Greenpointer, found the Pope’s miter hilarious.

Nothing says spring (or some facsimile thereof) has arrived in north Brooklyn like open windows and the felines who sit in them. Like this handsome fellow (who hails from Graham Avenue).

Hi Heather,
Thanks so much for working to keep the community updated! The signs said the detour would start on/about March 12, today, but nothing seemed to be different this morning. Would be nice to know exactly when the change will happen.

Well, the word on the street is construction is set to commence March 19th. It is interesting to note our Transportation Chair, Karen Nieves, was not alerted to this rather useful piece of information until last night. Not only did she voice her displeasure with this turn of events at last night’s Community Board meeting, but she is planning on organizing a public forum next month which will (hopefully) include our local elected officials. When I get the date/deets I will post them here.

Shy: East New York Brooklyn

Chris Arnade (who took the above photograph) writes:

Shy, 46, born and raised in the projects of East New York, fell in love with pigeons when he was six. “I was always watching them. I got sent to a camp one summer and spent most of the time watching the birds.” In his late teens he got into drugs, dealing and smoking crack. It ended with eleven years in jail for manslaughter, the result of a deal gone bad. He was released in 99 and has been clean since. “Jail changed me. I saw guys in there who ain’t ever coming out. Ever.”

Now he does some odd construction jobs, spending most of his free time on the roof of an abandoned building where he keeps his birds. “I got no need for attitude anymore, thats all gone. I am just happy sitting up here tending to my birds. I aint got much else, but when I am up here I can be happy and hope something better comes the next day.”

When I asked him how he wanted to be described he said “Simple and humble. Didn’t used to be, and it landed me in lots of trouble. Now I am content.”
