New York Shitty Day Ender: Saturday Afternoon On Manhattan Avenue

Today a local character we at the junk shop know simply as “Plastico” (presumably due to his attraction to wares made of plastic) spent the afternoon regaling Manhattan Avenue with a taste of Little Poland. I have no idea what (if anything) he made in the way of tips, but it certainly provided a nice soundtrack to a balmy Saturday afternoon in the Garden Spot!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: HELL, NO! & A Huron Street Kitten Update

This item comes courtesy of my friend and “foster mom” of the Huron Street kittens: Lisacat. She writes:

Hi Heather,

This show opened at the St. Cecilia Convent last night. I haven’t been yet but while taking some photos, the artist who actually made the “Hell, No!”, RJ Supa, waved from the steps. He gave me a press release and we chatted a bit. His hair was perfect… I’m intrigued and plan to go to one of the nights coming up this week. Lots happening at St. Cecilia’s lately! Rock ‘n’ roll in the school, dog training classes in the basement, tomato planters in the churchyard, film shoots and art all over the place… You can find more info on the convent show here.

P.S.: …the Huron kittens (which we have named Anna and Jerzy* — Ed. Note) are doing ok. They are still “runty” but eating and playing. I swear photos are coming soon  🙂

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Bicyclist Struck On Kingsland?

May 1, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

Speaking as someone who has seen the traffic around Kingland Avenue and Nassau Avenue I wish I could be surprised by this— but I’m not. Jen writes:

hey Heather-

I figured you were the best person to reach out to to ask this questions to. I live on kingsland between nassau and norman which has become a very heavy truck & bus route. The light at kingsland and norman is on the same timing schedule as the light at kingsland and norman so trucks and cars tend to FLY  down our street to make both lights, especialy at night.  While i don’t know if installing a… camera would deter this behavior perhaps changing the timing of one of the lights ( so they didnt both turn green at the same time) would make drivers less inclined to speed through the block.

Last night there was an accident in front of our apartment because of this very thing, 2 cyclists were riding and one was hit by a large truck (both cyclists had full lights on their bikes front and back along with flashing lights on their tires. The truck was going too fast and has severely injured the cyclist.

Long story short… perhaps you know the best people to try and get in contact with to try and get a change in the lights made?

Off the top of my head I would recommend you and your neighbors:

  1. bring this to the attention of our local Community Board. They have a transportation committee and this is the kind of thing they would be very interested in knowing about.
  2. contact our State Representative Joe Lentol. I know one of his community liaisons, a very nice lady named Amy. She is very interested in pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
  3. attend the next 94th Precinct Community Council meeting and bring this to the attention of our Deputy Inspector, Dennis Fulton. Speaking as someone who has attended these meetings I can tell you traffic is a common complaint. You will NOT be alone.

If anyone has more advice for Jen or would care to recount their own observations about the traffic in this area (in my opinion it needs policing— BADLY) please tender them in the comments. I would love to hear them! In closing I hope this, the latest person to be struck by truck traffic in our community— makes a speedy and full recovery. My best wishes go out to his (or her) family, friends and loved ones.

It would appear the B43 bus stop at Dupont Street has received a much-needed upgrade. Not only are the new and improved “adjustments” courtesy of an ink jet printer (versus black sharpie marker) and bilingual, but everything is weatherproofed with packing tape! NICE.

Has Anyone Seen Keesa?

I found this flier today on Green Street at Manhattan  Avenue after whiling away a most lively* afternoon at the junk shop. If you have seen Keesa or know of her whereabouts please contact her people at the above-listed telephone numbers. Thanks!

*READ: getting yelled at by crazed, churlish and cheap Polish women. Sadly, I missed the day’s main event: a one armed gent trying to steal a VHS tape recorder.  Believe it or not this is not the first time this dude has darkened the junk shop’s doorstep. He has also been caught stealing sneakers. My boss chased him down on Manhattan Avenue. He was carrying them by their shoestrings using his teeth.

Urban Fur: Meet Savannah

April 30, 2010 ·

As I have mentioned previously my photography show is up at Creek & Cave. This entailed, among other things, securing some fishing line (lest it was required as a non-obtrusive means to hang my work). Fortunately (and much to my mother’s horror*) we have a tackle shop in the Garden Spot and I made the acquaintance of another hardworking feline.

Meet Savannah.

As the above images suggest this lass is not terribly interested in having her picture taken. Not when there are customers to assist and head rubs to be had. She takes her job very seriously.

I learned her story from the cashier. It is a very amusing one. Apparently Savannah was a member of a colony of cats who live behind this establishment. WAS. One day Savannah decided to come inside— and she has been under their employ ever since! Can you blame her? Cats and fishing go together like peanut butter and jelly.

If you happen to see Savannah in your Manhattan Avenue ramblings, dear readers, give her a head scratch (or nine). This is one smart (and very sweet) lady!

*I assured her that people, do in fact, fish in Newtown Creek. Some even eat their “catch”.
