New York Shitty Day Ender: A Pile Driver Update
Courtesy of an anonymous tipster:
After many complaints from NCMC and the community, and a long conversation at our recent monthly NCMC-DEP meeting, the contractor has agreed to change the schedule for pile driving. For one more week (through January 27) the pile driving will continue in the evenings until 9:30 pm and then pile driving will be restricted to daytime hours on all future work. If you hear any pile driving after 9:30 pm next week, please send me an email and contact 311.
We are aware that the noise from the pile driving over the last month or so has been aggravating and troublesome. NCMC was not apprised of the pile driving before it started and as gone to some lengths to set up a process with the new Construction Management team to ensure that it does not happen again. And, thank you to those of you who filed complaints, those complaints force DEP to pay attention and help NCMC protect the community.
Christine Holowacz
Community Liaison
So we have one week left. In the meantime any and all 311 complaints should be forwarded to Ms. Holowacz via email at nc.mc (at) verizon (dot) net. In closing, I want to thank Ms. Holowacz, the folks of NCMC and our Community Board Environmental Chair, Ryan Kuonen, for their dedication and persistence in making that our voice heard!

New York Shitty Day Starter: What’s That Noise, Part II?
I suspect some of my fellow Greenpointers heard a repetitive and rather unpleasant sound last night. I know I did; I could hear it distinctly from my living room. This was of course a pile-driver going about its business at our local waste water treatment plant. A person we’ll call “K” writes:
Hi-
Last month you posted about the construction work happening at the Newtown Creek Treatment Plant, specifically the ridiculously loud pile driving going on at night. The pile driving was supposed to end on December 31st, and unfortunately, it has not. It’s not every night, but it’s still often enough and goes on long enough to be a huge annoyance.I’ve filed multiple noise complaints and I actually got a call from someone from the plant today (go 311!). The gentleman I spoke with was very polite and apologetic, but he didn’t offer up a whole lot of info. He said the work was being down to replace… something… and that “from what he’s heard” it should be done in a couple of weeks. I asked if there was someone in charge of the project that I could contact and told me to call back in the morning and ask for James Roy. The number is 718-389-2002.I’m sure there are many others in the neighborhood who are also going slightly insane over this so I thought it might be helpful to share this tidbit of information.Keep up the good work!
The DOB issued a variance permit that allows the pile driving every night until 930pm. (originally 1130pm). At the last NCMC meeting they (the job manager) estimated that it would be finished by end of Feb. It actually wasn’t supposed to end Dec 31st; They just receive 2 week permits, so when reading the first permit one might assume that the job is only 2 weeks but it isnt really. It is part of the construction of one of the new buildings– all part of the modernizing of the sewage treatment plant. They asked to do it at night because it is too dangerous to do the pile driving during daytime hours when the 400 person work crew is about.

Reader Contribution du Jour: Arriva Dirce!
Yours truly has developed quite a fascination with the proliferation of prodigal Christmas trees in our fine community. If the above photograph as taken by “French toast” is any indication, it would appear I am not alone. After some consideration I have decided a project is in order. The objectives are simple enough:
- Document Greenpoint/north Brooklyn’s feral Christmas tree population in the hope of
- determining exactly how long our fellow citizens are harboring these conifers.
To my recollection the latest discarded Christmas tree I have seen was in April. Surely, we can do better than that! So, if you see an interesting feral Christmas tree please take a photograph of it, note the location and send them to me at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. To get everyone in the proper post-holiday spirit, here is a tree I found tied to street sign in front of Biedronka this afternoon.
Note the 24 ounce bottle of Zywiec. Nice.
