New York Shitty Day Starter: The American Playground
Kicking off this sunny— if brisk— weekend I present to you this bit of leisure time captured at the American Playground yesterday.
For those of you who are wondering, the area adjacent to 49 Noble Street is still cordoned off due to falling debris. For those of you keeping track this makes over three months and counting.
It would appear, however, that some kind of detritus catcher has been put in place. What can we expect in the way of action to follow this most auspicious development?
If this (from the Department of Buildings web site) is any indication, I’d say not much.

LAST GASP: STOP
It would appear the notion of a night-time bazaar on our waterfront has not gone over well with some of the citizenry. I for one found “problematic outdoor toilet facilities” particularly amusing. Given the state of the public lavatories hereabouts, “problematic” (which I am guessing is a kind way of saying poorly maintained and revolting) is pretty much par for the course. In this respect I fail to see how this event’s privies will be unique.

P.S.: Special thanks goes out to diana gee for sending this my direction.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Very Special Problem
L writes:
Dear Miss Heather,
I’m writing you, the current authority of Greenpoint, for some advice,
How do you politely and safely remove a polish homeless man from your stoop? As of late, one has been currently making my sunny stoop his favorite napping place. It makes getting inside my apartment difficult, not to mention embarrassing. 311 has been of no help. Does WR Hardware sell a homeless repellent spray or some sort of scarecrow?
L brings up a very good point: while we are advised to call 311 by our elected officials and police department it seldom does any good. That having been written, here’s a few ideas I have for L off the top of my head:
- Call the 94th Precinct directly (WARNING: you might get relegated to their automated system. Not fun.)
- Go to the next Community Council Meeting (you can view calendar here) and talk to D. I. Hurson directly. (Probably your best option.)
- Take up the matter with your elected officials. Given that homeless outreach seems to be of special interest to him I would suggest reaching out to City Councilman, Steve Levin.
Does anyone have more advice for L? If so, please share via comments.
