Follow-up to The Greenpoint “Hate Sticker” Post

antiSemitismTHUMBI wrote a post on Sunday about an anti-Semitic sticker I found affixed to a Greenpoint pay phone (which can be seen at left). Well, it has been brought to my attention by three commenters that a number of such items (dis)grace the Garden Spot. To cite an example, bob writes:

hi, miss heather. i checked your blog this morning and saw this entry. later, i was walking up manhattan from driggs to the produce store. on the way, i saw a sticker from the same folks (or, “volk” i suppose), only this one substituted “fags” for “jews” as a gay jew living in greenpoint, my morning sure got off to a great start. it was on the window of the laundromat directly across the street from dunkin’ (the one with the red awning). before getting shooed away, i managed to rip the “fags” part off. the rest is still there, or it was when i left anyway. alas, the camera was at home.

This morning I went for a walk and documented all the stickers my commenters noted. In so doing I (unfortunately) found a hitherto undiscovered one. I made sure to note the address and/or intersection where each sticker was located. When I got home I printed out my findings, annotated them and took them tonight’s 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting. In said meeting I brought them to D.I. Fulton’s attention. My grievance was taken seriously— if not by some attendees present (a few of whom sighed, groaned and rolled their eyes). Here’s the deal:

I have been advised that moving forward I am to bring these stickers (when I find them) to the police department’s attention, be it by calling them or forwarding images (with location) to an officer who will henceforth be my “point person”. This same gentleman guaranteed there will be an investigation. In addition, D.I. Fulton told me that ripping these stickers down is perfectly legal. So there have you. All I asked in return was that he have these stickers removed stat. Mister Fulton assured me this will happen.

In other words if you, dear readers, find such stickers/hate speech on your block the NYPD has your ear. Call ’em.

Dear Miss Heather,

Although I currently reside in Florida (suckfest), I’m a huge fan and avid reader of your blog…

Although I could toot your horn all day, I’ll be honest and tell you I have an ulterior motive: my boyfriend (ex? current? we haven’t quite decided) recently linked up with his friends from Williamsburg.  These boys are the current owners of Vinnie’s Pizza on Bedford Ave, known largely for their great selection of Vegan/Vegetarian specialty pies and their “T.HANKS” trash can featured on an array of blogs in recent months.  AAAAnyshit, I was hoping to anonymously alert you and your readers to their new location, opening right in Greenpoint at Nassau and Kingsland.

I’m not entirely sure when they’re set to open, but from the sound of it the date should fall well before the new year. I don’t know if this is necessarily of any interest to you but figured it was worth a try to help out a friend.  Thanks so much and keep of the great work – I always look forward to new posts!

Thanks for the kind words and head’s up, Anonymous. I am certain this will definitely be of interest to my friends in McGolrick Heights!

FOUND AT MCCARREN PARK: Dog

FOUND

I stumbled upon this flier  on Lorimer Street as I was walking home this evening. As the flier indicates, this lovely lass was found at McCarren Park yesterday, November 9, at 8:00 p.m. If this is your dog, please contact her good Samaritan, Elizabeth, at the above-listed phone number as soon as possible. If she does not hear from the rightful owner before November 19th she will assume this girl was abandoned (and if she was— SHAME ON YOU, whoever you are).

Thanks!

Here it is: highlights from yesterday’s dog parade from McGolrick Park. Nothing fancy (try filming dogs— they’re harder than cats. Felines don’t give a damn about attention; canines care a lot.). Noetheless you’ll see a couple prize winners and many other winsome pups in the following footage!

There ended up being so many great contestants at the District Dog Halloween Parade today my fellow judges and I had a very hard time deciding picking a winner! In fact, we decided to hand out six instead of three honorable mention awards just to give recognition where we felt it was due. On that note— and without the further ado— here are the best dressed dogs in Greenpoint!

I want to give props to all the folks (and their pups) who participated in today’s parade. You’re all winners as far as I’m concerned. This evening I will not only post a slide show from today’s festivities but also (paws crossed) some video footage as well. So stay tuned!

P.S.: As you have probably noticed I have only listed five out of the six Honorable Mention winners. This is because I have forgotten who the sixth winner was! Any and all help jogging my memory (via email or comments) would be most appreciated. Thanks!

kestanethumbToday I walked to Kestane Kebab stomach a rumbling in the hope that they had opened. No such luck. However, they do have menus available to the curious and hungry. Naturally I grabbed one. As you will see (by clicking here) it is rather extensive (it even includes seafood) and has some of the most esoteric copy I have read in a long, long time. For example, item #28, a gyro:

Layers of marinated ground meat wrapped around the large vertical split and grilled in front of an ingenious herd of charcoal fire.

Who can argue with that? In all seriousness if any of you, dear readers, has the  scoop as to when this establishment will open please share. I am very eager to try it. “Ingenious herds of fire” and all!

In other news (well, of the rumor variety) some of you might have noticed that Paloma’s old space (60 Greenpoint Avenue) is at long last getting an overhaul. The the neighborhood buzz is an Italian restaurant is going to move into this space. Hmm…

suspectI have received a number of emails about this incident and in the public interest I want to pass it along. STAT. Casey writes:

Hi Miss Heather,

I live over on Diamond and Nassau, where apparently a woman was raped the other day.

http://www.wpix.com/news/wpix-rapist-sought-brooklyn,0,1753626.story

I’ve never felt unsafe in my neighborhood, but after this and the recent muggings on Driggs in the same area, I just wanted to get the word out for my neighbors to stay safe and alert.

Thanks for all you do with newyorkshitty, and congrats on being named best neighborhood blog!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Casey. I want to tender my sincerest wishes to the victim of this assault and her loved ones. I suppose it goes without saying that if anyone reading this knows anything about this crime (which came to pass Tuesday, October 20, at 4:30 a.m. and whose suspect’s composite sketch graces this post) please contact Crimestoppers via telephone, text message or online at: 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), CRIMES (274637) (then enter TIP577) or www.NYPDCrimeStoppers.com. All tips/calls will remain confidential.

Be careful out there, folks and ladies please be advised that if you are out at these wee hours and need a safe ride home do not hesitate to contact Rightrides. They serve Williamsburg and Greenpoint and it’s absolutely FREE.

As All Hallow’s Eve draws closer Greenpoint keeps getting more and more ghoulish (like this goose I found on Noble Street). Follows are some highlights from my sojourn around the neighborhood today. Enjoy!

648 Humboldt Street didn’t disappoint. However, I am concerned about the absence of the demonic clowns. They’re my favorite (after the Humboldt Hurler). But we have thirteen days to go…
