A Very Special Stimulus Package

May 9, 2009 ·

Last night I finally got around to having dinner with my good friend Chin. Once we got done with catching up she brought a very special discovery to my attention. And although it really has nothing to do with the usual content of this blog I am going to share it with you anyway. One day she wondered to herself if anyone had seen fit to make a Real Doll that looks like Six from Battlestar Galactica. For those of you who are not in the know, Real Dolls are a very high end and (as the name indicates) realistic looking , a-hem, sexual partners whose cost run into four figures. To make a long story short she discovered these tough times have impacted the mail-order companionship business so the folks at Real Doll have rolled out a very special stimulus package of their own.

Not only do these bad boys (or would that be girls?) come with free shipping but they’re entirely made in the good ol’  U.S. of A.! Now there’s a bail-out package we can all really get behind.

Figuratively speaking.

Yesterday I was busy doing what I imagine a number of my fellow New Yorkers were actively in engaged in doing: purchasing groceries and essentials before the big snowstorm hit. One stop on my itinerary was the Gem Super Value Store on Grand Street to purchase some boxer shorts.

Upon entering I noticed a most curious sign in this day and age of recession.A missive of “we are not going out of business” variety. Wanting to know what required its creation I took the matter up with the cashier. She was more than happy to give me the scoop.

Apparently their establishment’s decision to do some remodelling has been a source of confusion to the community. A number of customers have approached the staff concerned that the store— a loved place to purchase housewares— was going to close. In addition a number of real estate agents have made inquiries for their own nefarious purpose: drumming up a little business. So it was decided a sign was in order to clear up any confusion as to what is going on at 695 Grand Street.

The Gem Store at 695 Grand Street is not— REPEAT— NOT going out of business. East Williamburgers your beloved housewares connection is safe and sound. What’s more, they are doing quite well. And as for all you real estate agents who have been pestering the staff: there’s plenty of recession-induced misery to go around. Just not here. Enough already.

Yes sir, that waterfront rezoning has kicked gentrification in Greenpoint into overdrive. Why, just a few years ago we couldn’t afford spray paint to tag our burned out cars.

Anyone care to guess how long this hilarious item will remain on India Street? From the look of things I’d say this carbecque has been sitting here for at least 48 hours.
