From The New York Shitty Inbox: Drunk Driving on Nassau Avenue?
Filed under: 11222, Criminal Activity, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
A person we’ll call “A” writes yesterday, March 5th, at 6:45 p.m.:
Hey,
There was just a loud collision at the corner of Humboldt and Nassau – lots of witnesses. A clearly intoxicated driver rear ended another car. The driver was stumbling and slurring his words. Yelling at the other driver not to call the cops. And that he would give him $1000 if he just didn’t call the cops. I left because it was freezing and looked like it might get physical. Luckily it looked the driver of the first car was definitely calling the cops, as well as a couple other witnesses. And there was already a very long line of traffic backed up on Humboldt.
Anyway I’m writing because its really scary that someone was driving that drunk in our neighborhood at 6:30 pm (not that its ever not scary.)
With the horrible accident with the delivery man from Chinese Musician just a few months ago this is starting to be an epidemic… If you find anything out about this, please post. I hope the cops were called. I tried to remember the plate number but forgot – NY plates though.
I contacted the head of the 94th, D.I. Hurson and here’s what he had to say:
Yes, we got him.
New York Shitty Day Starter: Great Moments of Real Estate Hyperbole
(Or: The “Hart” of Greenpoint)
There is real estate insanity and then there is real estate insanity. This apartment, located at the immensely bucolic intersection of Green Street and Manhattan Avenue, has a manifold number of advertisements on Craigslist. But by far this one was the most imaginative (hence why I decided it merited mention). Nothing says “luxury” like a toilet ready, willing and able to do its duty juxtaposed against a tropical paradise (which Greenpoint, my beloved home, is decidedly not). Citing the G train as an enticement is rather dubious as well. The previous having been written, here are the rest.
All these listings are purportedly “by owner”. Damn.
P.S.: Lest any of you, dear readers, are wondering why I was looking at apartment advertisements on Craigslist in this draconian price bracket I’ll tell you. I had the pleasure of bumping into yet another group of people waiting to view “apartments” at 239 Banker Street this weekend! Here’s what one had to say afterward:
Hi Heather. Thanks, again, for the heads up on the shady business at Banker St. today. The apartment had very bad craftsmanship and the only elevator in the building was a scary freight elevator that had a sign stating it was unlawful for any person other than the operator to ride in the elevator…the guy renting out the spaces is named Saul (917-549-XXXX) and he’s got them listed multiple times on craigslist. We’re obviously going to pass on that building but we really loved the area. Do you have any tips/leads on finding an apartment around there? I’d appreciate any help you could offer!
I have tendered my advice to this (incredibly nice) person. If any of you, dear readers, have tips/advice as well please share them via comments or via email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. This having been written, it would appear Saul’s advertisements regarding 239 Banker Street have since disappeared into the ether. No worries, I found this…
and this.

This petition was brought to my attention by its creator: Lincoln Restler, Democratic State Committeeman for Brooklyn’s 50th Assembly District and all-around great guy. If you agree with me that this is one change the MTA has made that is worth keeping, please take a moment to sign this petition. Thanks!

Sometimes it’s tough being Peter Gabriel in a Phil Collins world. This is for all the Peter Gabriel fans (or lovers of rubber suits) out there…
P.S.: This act kicked off a philosophical discussion with a couple chaps hanging out outside the entrance to the G train (and there always are men hanging at this location). I told one of them that while I really had no strong feelings about either Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel one way or the other, I felt the voice of those who prefer the latter should be heard. I also added I liked flowers and rubber suits. They agreed that this made perfect sense. They also concurred with me when I said we live in a strange and very wonderful place.

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: DOA on Manhattan Avenue?
Filed under: 11222, Criminal Activity, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
I arrived home from this evening’s Public Safety Committee meeting (which, it should be noted handles criminal matters) to find this item (which hails from NYScanner) in my inbox. I have reached out to the head of the 94th Precinct, Deputy Inspector Hurson, in the hope he can shed some light on what happened. It goes without saying that if/when I learn anything, I will post an update here.
UPDATE, March 2, 10:55 a.m.: I have received a clarification from D.I. Hurson! He writes:
I don’t see anything for Greenpoint and Manhattan ave, we did have a DOA last night inside of 1109 Manhattan Ave but we don’t believe it to be suspicious.
For those of you who are not in the know 1109 Manhattan Avenue is the Greenpoint Hotel (hence perhaps a transposition was made?). This is one of our community’s, um, notorious establishments.
