Inauguration 2009: The Orange Cat Conspiracy?

January 21, 2009 ·

I suspect I speak for many white liberals when I say I thoroughly enjoyed Reverend Joseph Lowery’s benediction yesterday. That is, except for one part:

“… help us work for that day when black will not be asked to give back, when brown can stick around, when yellow will be mellow, when the red man can get ahead, man, and when white will embrace what is right.”

No, I am not the least bit perturbed about his admonishment to white people. We as a group deserve it and I am more than happy to “take one for the team”. Rather, the fly in my proverbial ointment is this:

What about the orange?

bodhiandobama

As many of you are aware I posted the above photograph with one of my favorite memorable quotes from Gerald Ford (though to be frank, there really are not too many to choose from) yesterday. I was fascinated by my cat Bodhi’s interest in Barack Obama’s speech. Perhaps this little guy is more politically, historically* and socially aware than I thought?

Anyhoo, a couple readers found the above image amusing as well. Rowan writes:

historic moment aside, that is a superb “reflection” shot. it looks like Bodhi is floating near Obama’s shoulder, like some kind of orange feline guardian angel.

Al Oof adds:

yes, i’m into the cat on obama’s shoulder shot too.

Feeling loquacious I replied:

It is a little known fact that Bodhi (an orange tabby from Greenpoint, Brooklyn) is Mr. Obama’s speech writer. In this capacity he demanded to be on hand to make sure things went along smoothly. And they did.

Now that I have let one secret slip I might as well to let you in on another: orange cats in Greenpoint seem to have taken an inordinate interest in Barack Obama being inugurated as the 44th President of the United States.

Shortly after uploading my photograph of Bodhi I discovered this image from one of my Flickr buddies, Mihow.

orangegenius

When I logged onto Flickr today this item from Orange Genius was awaiting my viewing pleasure with the following  remark (dare?):

OK ladies, I see your orange tabbies and I raise you an orange tabby. This is the real orange Genius, catching up on the news after the inauguration.

Mere coincidence or a sign of things to come? In the name of scientific research I have erected a Flickr group dedicated to this phenomenon. Did your feline take an inordinate interest in Barack Obama’s inauguration? Do you have photographic documentation? If so, please add your kitty (cats of all colors, breeds and locations are welcome) to this pool.

Your urgent attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.

*His particular interest in the end of Barack’s speech (when he invokes Tom Paine’s Common Sense) would certainly seem to indicate this.

Anyone Seen Dakota?

The details on this flier are scant but its timing and location is very interesting. Will this family receive a voice mail demanding reward money for their beloved pet’s return? I certainly hope not— but in light of recent events I am not terribly optimistic.

Have You Seen Dubi?

dubi

I just received the following (and very disquieting) email from my friends over at District Dog regarding the above depicted pet. Please give it a read as the circumstances under which this dog disappeared are more than a little dubious. Rob writes:

Hi Everyone,

I am sure you have seen the signs for the MISSING BLACK AND TAN CHOW/ SHEPARD MIX in the neighborhood.  It was last seen with a girl about 5’10” and blonde hair, she was wearing a brown coat.  The dogs name is Dubi,  he is a well taken care of dog, we can attest to this.

If anyone has any information, please contact us immediately.

We just returned from our trip and are heartbroken to hear that he is missing.

We have been told that the girl that took him from Christina’s Corner Store believed the owner abandoned him.  This is not the case.  The dog was in the park with the owner running around with his leash hanging and took off.  Someone must have tied him up at the corner store.  We can understand the initial interpretation, but circumstances cannot be assumed.

Hiram, Dubi’s owner has been to the police and shelters with no luck yet. He received a message from the person who took the dog, saying she was not going to give the dog back. This is illegal.  She has not even spoken directly to him yet and did not leave a number to call back.  We have been told that she lives withing a few blocks of the store.

PLEASE PASS THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW IN THE AREA.
WE CAN BE REACHED 24/7 AT 718.290.7434
OR BY EMAIL rob (at) districtdog (dot) com

PLEASE HELP US GET DUBI HOME.
TELL EVERYONE YOU SEE IN THE DOG RUN OR WALKING A DOG.

If you have seen Dubi please contact Rob via email or the above telephone number immediately. Let’s get this handsome chap back to his rightful owner. Thanks!

UPDATE, 1/14/09: I spoke to Rob Maher this afternoon. Apparently the woman who left the voice message stating she was not returning this gentleman’s dog also berated him for not offering a reward. Naturally if I get my hands on this delightful missive you can look forward to hearing it on New York Shitty. In the meantime I will have to be satisfied with adding the coveted “asshole” tag to this post.

A Home For Ella

December 2, 2008 ·
Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Park Slope

This was forwarded by a reader of mine. Once you learn about Ella’s situation you will understand the urgency of her situation. Vivian writes:

Ella lived most of her life in a parking lot in Brooklyn.  Although she was fed and had a “doghouse” she was always alone and rarely acknowledged.  A month ago we learned that construction was to begin in the lot, so she was being evicted.  She is currently at a short-term foster home, but Ella needs to find a foster or permanent home urgently.

Ella is about 6 years old, approximately 55 lbs, and a lab-shep mix. She is completely house broken and very sweet – doesn’t seem that she was abused.  She loves everyone and is OK with kids.  Ella is a great dog for someone that doesn’t want to deal with issues – She is low maintenance and very easy going – no separation anxiety and not destructive.  She is just happy hanging out.  Unfortunately Ella doesn’t like cats and is probably best with smaller dogs.

Anyone interested in giving Ella the gift a home this holiday season should contact Vivian at info (at) HouseBrokenny (dot) com. It should be noted that HouseBrokenny has offered to provide free dog walking to the adoptive/foster parents for Ella if they live in the “Park Slope area” (READ: Prospect Heights, Park Slope or Crown Heights vicinity) until she becomes acclimatized to her new home.

A Queens Cat

November 23, 2008 ·
Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Queens

Those of you who had the pleasure of going out yesterday probably noticed that it was cold as fuck. Mr. Heather was smart enough to stay indoors. I, on the other hand, was not so lucky: I had to work. The previous having been said New York Shitty’s bipeds were not the only ones wise enough to know that a roof over one’s head was much preferable than toughing it out on the mean streets yesterday.

c wrote:

Last night …I came home from dinner and …as I opened the door in marched a cat. She’s parked in front of an upstairs radiator right now after having spent the night.  Let me know if you’re interested in taking this one off my hands.  She’s a pretty quiet one.  At least I think it’s a “she”.  Kind of small – probably only a few months old.

This Queens cat is no dummy. (S)he knows that being in a nice warm home is much better than toughing it out sub-freezing weather. Anyone interested making the acquaintance of this street savvy chat should contact c at:

Although my colleague over at The Gowanus Lounge has already brought attention to this event I feel compelled to post here anyway. Those of you who will be braving the cold today down on Bedford Avenue should swing by NYCPet and say “Hi” to some of the sweetest kitties in north Brooklyn. Who knows, maybe you’ll find a new friend to share some Thanksgiving turkey with!

November 22, 2008 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.

To get everyone in the adoption spirit, I am going to close with a video shot by Lisacat featuring some “outtakes” from the photo shoot where the above-depicted image came from. Enjoy!

It just goes to show if you think herding cats is bad, wrangling kittens is worse!
