New York Shitty Photo Du Jour: The Word On The Street

The Other Broadway NYS

What does one give the man who has everything for his birthday? A man who, had he not been born— and made some interesting life choices (I prefer “detours”)—  yours truly probably would not have been either? This one is for the man who gave me the gift of gab. The one who was quite happy to let me— a GIRL— play with Erector sets, Legos, and showed me— much to my mother’s consternation— how to make and ignite gunpowder. The one who was not shy to “start shit”. The one who demonstrated to me how to berate public officials. In neatly written paragraphs using a cadence and vocabulary rarely seen— much less read— nowadays. The one who wrote this recently:

The reason Politicians (that’s not a typo— Ed. Note) try so hard to get re-elected is that they would ‘hate’ to have to make a living under the laws they’ve passed.

This one’s for you, Dad. Better one day late than never!

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part III: E-Waste Recycling (& Raffle)

EWasteRecycling

This comes courtesy of Artineh Havan, who heads the Grand Street Business Improvement District. She writes:

Dear Miss Heather,

I hope that you are well.  We would greatly appreciate it if you could include a public service announcement about our electronics recycling event (in partnership with the Lower East Side Ecology Center) on Grand Street between Graham Avenue and Humboldt Street this Saturday, April 5th from 10 am to 4 pm, rain or shine.

As you know, if put in the trash, these items end up in landfills, leaching toxins into our ground water.

A list of acceptable working and nonworking electronics is below or here:

• Computers (laptops & desktops, servers, mainframes)
• Monitors
• Printers, scanners, fax-machines, copiers
• Network devices (routers, hubs, modems, etc.)
• Peripherals (keyboards, mice, cables, cords, chargers, etc.)
• Tablets and E-readers
• Components (hard drives, CD-ROMs, circuit boards, power supplies, etc.)
• TVs, VCRs, DVRs, & DVD Players
• Digital Converter Boxes, Cable/Satellite Receivers
• Portable music players
• Audio-visual equipment
• Video-games
• Cell phones, pagers, PDAs
• Telecommunication (phones, answering machines, etc.)

In addition, participants can be entered into a raffle to win a MacBook Air courtesy of TekServe.

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Done!

Spotted On Manhattan Avenue: Missing

These flyers have been popping up all over the Garden Spot. Keep your eyes peeled fellow Greenpointers— and spread the word!

The Word On The Street Part II: Home

From Johnson Avenue.

The Word On The Street: East Williamsburg Trifecta

Taken March 18, 2014.

The Word On The Street, Part IV: Harrison Street

As today’s selections suggest today’s peregrinations resulted in a wealth of anonymous musings in north Brooklyn. Most made me chuckle. This one lead to a moment of introspection. I came to the realization as to why I love this city so damned much:

  1. I am not over-endowed in the patience department.
  2. I have an affinity for a certain word employed in this missive in all its forms, conjugations and uses. I do not think I need to go into any more detail.

The Word On The Street, Part II: Thames Street

This novel approach to the combating the littering problem is downright ingenious. I’d even go so far as to say given the location (“East Williamsburg”) it might actually work. Clean sidewalks = free drugs for the masses!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day From New York Shitty!

QCscreengrabWTFnys

I know what you’re thinking:

What the FUCK is this and how does it pertain to St. Paddy’s Day?

Well, it has been yours truly’s observation that March 17th, not unlike Cinco De Mayo, is regrettably pressed into service so certain folks can go forth and act like drunken imbeciles. All they need is a location and an excuse (not unlike Santacon)— which brings me to where I found the above image: Queens Crap. Read on North Brooklynites, you’ll find this interesting.

QCflamesFlamesQueens Crap reports that fire was in effect at yesterday’s “Flea Market” event at the Knockdown Center. Speaking as a north Brooklynite, I have seen my fair share of that shit. It is usually accompanied by drum circles.

The “blue bus”? Same thing. Reference my previous observation about drum circles.

Where it gets interesting for yours truly is here:

…It has also been brought to my attention that David Sklar is operating a niteclub/arts center at 15 Rewe Street in Brooklyn which is in a really sketchy area. It also was formerly home to a door factory owned by the Sklars, just like the Knockdown Center was…

I have a much different definition of what constitutes a “sketchy area” than my comrade in Queens. However, I can assure you 15 Rewe Street is owned by David Sklar. And hosting parties, however legally questionable they were, did come to pass at 15 Rewe Street. Let’s start by establishing who actually owns 15 Rewe Street:

15 Rewe Street LLC.* Okay, let’s check this out on the New York State Attorney General’s Corporation’s Database.

Hmm.

Perhaps we should check out the Department of Buildings BIS system?

Yes, this is quite interesting. Let’s go in for a better look!

Oh my, it would appear 15 Rewe Street (which is located in an Industrial Business Zone)— at the instigation of David Sklar— was planning a party.

A really BIG party.

For those of you who cannot read it (I for one could not), follows are the amenities this event/space had to offer:

Venue Details

40,000 square feet out door

What’s more, even Timeout New York was “on” to this whole “compound” thing.

Hmm. I wonder how this got past Community Board 1 Brooklyn or the State Liquor Authority? In any case and to wrap this up, the image gracing the beginning of this post is (by all appearances) from “Dada Life’s” New Year’s Party at 15 Rewe Street.

Which we have established is owned by David Sklar. Who had this to say about why the Knockdown Center should be granted a liquor license at Community Board 5:

Really?

*This is an alternate address for the Knockdown Center.

Yup.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Joint SLA Committee & Public Safety Committee Meeting This Thursday!

gothamistSCThere it is, the list of applications and renewals in its resplendent glory! While I am vaguely on the subject of public safety, I found this (at left) news to be quite disconcerting— but sadly not exactly surprising. What is surprising, however, is a response I got from someone who I had inquired as to where NYC issue condoms can be found/had hereabouts:

Perhaps Dewey can fish some out of Newtown Creek for you?

But seriously, I was going to direct you to the online condom directory, but
alas, when I put in the 11222 zip code, there were no locations to be found.
And then they wonder why people in the area don’t use them…

https://a816-healthpsi.nyc.gov/DispensingSiteLocator/mainView.do

And, as our very own Public Safety Chair added:

Perhaps BABAR (Brooklyn Allied Bars And Restaurants — Ed. Note) could be prodded into encouraging its member bars to put out fishbowls of them at all thier bars. This is the easiest and most effective way to distribute them and I am sure the Health Department would send cartons of them to BABAR to distribute to their member bars. Social responsibility may not be ironic enough without prodding…

Community Board 1 Joint SLA and Public Safety Committee Meeting
February 27, 2014 starting at 6:30 p.m.
435 Graham Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11211

P.S.: Lest you are wondering why, gentle readers, yours truly was interested in access to free condoms. It is for a little art project I am working on (inspired by this)

There ain’t candy in these here Easter eggs. This Easter Bunny wants Greenpoint to practice safe(r) sex. Really folks…
