FRIDAY: Supper Club Fundraiser at the Greenpoint Reformed Church

October 19, 2011 ·
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

I was recently asked by one of the amazing ladies in charge of the Greenpoint Reformed Church (and its Hunger Relief Program) if I would help spread the word about their upcoming Supper Club fundraiser. This I will gladly do as they have— and continue to do— great work here. Here’s the 411 for this event their press release:

We are really excited for our October dinner! Holler (who played at our first supper club last year) will be playing old-time country music in the backyard during our special cocktail hour. As always the meal is TBD, but how could it not include squash, leafy greens, apples and pears?

Our supper clubs are designed to celebrate our community while raising money for our weekly soup kitchen dinners in a communal and convivial spirit. Please join us!

Every week we work to provide delicious, quality (organic when possible) dinners for the hungry folks of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. In the bountiful summer months of the year, we have a lot of help from awesome farmers who, via several local CSAs, allow us to glean their overflow. Times are tougher in the lean winter months-our goal is to raise enough money to pay for fresh quality food to last through those cold months. Consider this our “un-can” drive! Help us make sure that “the best” is available for EVERYONE-all year long.

Dinner will be a four-course vegetarian meal using the same great local, organic produce that we use in our Wednesday night meal. The dinner is served family style-which we hope adds to the convivial spirit of the event! BYO wine and come early for a special (extra charge) cocktail hour.

Because our menu relies on the most seasonal produce from local farmers, please stay tuned for the exact details of the meal…

NOTE: a suggested $20.00 donation is requested and you must R.S.V.P. to attend. You can do the latter via the Supper Club’s Facebook page. Otherwise, you can contact the event’s organizer via email at: annefay (at) gmail (dot) com. Check it out!

Friends of Greenpoint Library

Who We Are: Friends of Greenpoint Library began in 2008 as a group of neighborhood volunteers who wanted to create a voice for the local library, and to advocate for literacy in the community. From these humble beginnings, the group started their own branch Friends group and has expanded out to community members and become the most active Friends group in the Brooklyn Public Library system. We are deeply committed to improving the quality of life in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and firmly believe that libraries and literacy are central to the civic life of our neighborhood community.

Event Details: The Friends of Greenpoint Library are looking for new members. We are a volunteer run, library advocacy group, and are active in the neighborhood. Our central goals are to:

Raise their community’s awareness and enthusiasm about the local library

Promote the local library’s resources and programs in the neighborhood

Keep local officials aware of the library’s importance to the communities they represent

Raise funds to enhance neighborhood library service.

Friends do everything from letter writing and making legislative visits to sponsoring library events; from planting gardens to organizing bake, craft and toy sales to musical performances for both children and adults. Just a little of your time can make a big difference for our community!

Those of you who are interested in joining this wonderful effort— or simply want more information— can contact the folks behind this endeavor via email at thefriendsofgreenpointlibrary (at) gmail (dot) com or check out their Facebook page!

Here are your benches, Greenpoint!

Go to the end of Java Street at look at ’em for yourself.

A lass named Sherry opines:

The “park” was open during Nuit Blanche a few weeks ago…Was the only time I’ve ever seen the “park” — in quotes since it’s so dismal — open.

Your tax dollars at work, folks!

UPDATE, October 20, 2011: I got the 411 on this situation from an anonymous tipster!

First, this is not a city park – it’s a pop up park allowed by the owner of the property and partially funded by OSA. So, no tax dollars at work.  HOWEVER, the reason it isn’t open, is because neither the Parks Dept nor OSA have anyone or are willing to delegate anyone to go over there every day and unlock it…

So there have you: public property (benches, as funded by our tax dollars) is locked up on private property and therefore unusable because our Parks Department/open space “advocacy” group cannot get their shit together.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Where Did The Benches Go?

A lady we’ll call “S” writes:

Hello, Miss Heather –
I was wondering if you know where the benches on the pier on India St. went. My boyfriend and I were taking our daily constitutional with our 2 week old daughter and were planning on gazing out at the water and Manhattan for a bit, but were dismayed to find out that there are no longer benches to sit on. What a bummer!

I cannot profess to have an answer (if anyone is in the know, please share via comments or shoot me an email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot com), however, I do have a theory. The East River has long been quite a popular fishing spot for a number of my fellow Garden Spotters.

This chap, for example, was captured cleaning his catch on Huron Street just a few months ago. I have no doubt the prospect of fishing in deeper water via the India Street pier holds a great deal of appeal to these gentleman. In fact, I know it does!

CASE IN POINT: this gentleman, who it should be noted is inexplicably wearing a shirt. I assure you this is not usually the case. But I digress. I have on more than one occasion found fish heads, assorted entrails, and other vestiges of someone’s “dinner” gracing the India Street Pier pier for everyone’s edification.

While not exactly my cup of tea, I do have to confess I am hard-pressed to think of a more appropriate “welcome” for visitors disembarking at our fair burgh than this piece of “street meat”. This item may not be easy on the eyes (or nose)— but then again many things in the Garden Spot fall under this category. In this respect a mere fish tail (and the odd shirtless man or two) is not only consistent, but downright quaint. What’s more, it is a hell of a lot better than this. WARNING/CAVEAT: view the proceeding post— and the links contained therein— at your own risk.

UPDATE, 2:21 p.m.: thanks to a lady named Rowan we have an answer! Per the folks of the East River ferry:

They’re located in the park by the entrance of the Pier. We don’t have control over where they go, as they belong to the City.

A park, I’ll add, that to date I have never EVER seen open to the “public”. Click here and behold the Greenpoint glory for yourself. Seeing is truly believing. In closing, I’ll leave you with this image of our very own Community Board 1 chair, Christopher Olechowski, patronizing one such bench on September 22, 2011.
