A chap named Andrew (who brought the above vehicle to my attention) writes (in an email entitled I Know You’ve Seen The Limo):

…but have you seen the watercraft these guys are working on?

I have now. Great find, Andrew!

Greenpoint Photos du Jour: Nelson & His Ride

July 31, 2011 ·

When I saw this great bicycle yesterday on Franklin Street I simply had to capture it and its owner, Nelson, for posterity.

After noting the two rather jaunty skulls, Nelson showed me a few other points of interest on his ride— and person!

This little fellow is his “son”. He glows in the dark.

Nelson hails from Isabela, Puerto Rico. You can learn more about Isabel by clicking here.

These are Nelson’s children: Nelson (Junior) and Isabel. I’ll give you three guesses after what the latter is named!

These are Nelson’s parents. he noted that his mother had died fairly recently but that his father is still alive. He is 74 years old!

Lest I have not written this before I will do so now: one of the joys of operating this site is the people I meet while knocking around the neighborhood. By posting their faces and sharing a little bit about these people I am endeavoring to put a “face” on my community: north Brooklyn. There are a number of fascinating people to be found here— and Nelson is certainly one of them. It was a pleasure meeting you!

New York Shitty Day Starter: An Update Regarding The Robbery At 93 Nassau Avenue

This morning I awakened to find an email from Deputy Inspector Hurson of the 94th Precinct. I am pleased to pass along that one of the men responsible for last week’s robbery/shooting has been apprehended! His name is Alex Lagoa and he was released five years ago after serving a twenty year sentence for murder. It should be noted he shot no less than two police officers while being arrested for the aforementioned crime. Yikes!

WANTED IN GREENPOINT: “Hipstras”

When I saw this flier (which graces the front of T & N Wine & Liquor) yesterday afternoon I simply had to capture it for posterity’s sake. Yours truly was particularly amused that being a “blogger with a digital camera” made the list of qualifications. In any case, those of you looking to make a little extra money (albeit while perpetuating a stereotype) might want to shoot these folks an email. Tell them Miss Heather sent you!

P.S.: I would like to take a moment to thank this endeavor’s location scout, Jeff Brown, for taking my community’s advice to heart. Thus far I have not received a single complaint about the film shoots which have come to pass hereabouts.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Digusting

This very disturbing item comes from a person we’ll call “B”. He writes:

Hi Miss Heather,

I just wanted to let you know that my wife and I were walking our dog last night on west and eagle and came across a garbage bag with at least one probably two dead pit bulls in it…It was truly horrible and heartbreaking as they looked like they were used for fighting and then just tossed out in a black garbage bag…I don’t know what kind of despicable person would do such a thing. We called the ASPCA animal cruelty hotline, but they said they can’t really do anything unless you see the crime in progress and instructed us to call sanitation or 311…so I guess they would just be picked up and disposed of. I hope you can put the word out to people to keep an eye out for anyone dumping anything around there. It was really nasty and there was blood everywhere on the ground…not sure if the bag is still there at this point, but hopefully someone will see something next time and we can catch these bastards.

I have reached out to the 94th Precinct in the hope I can find out:

  1. If this has been brought to their attention and
  2. what is the standard protocol if someone (god forbid) comes across something like this in the future.

Update, 4:21 p.m.: Here’s what I have heard from D. I. Hurson.

Miss Heather, just got your e-mail… I have not heard of any dog fighting in Green point. It sounds from your email that the dogs were dumped on West street (since it can be somewhat deserted. If anyone suspects dog fighting they should call 911 immediately.

So there you go.
