From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part III: A Question About Polish Bakeries
This inquiry comes from a chap named Mark. He writes:
Hiya Heather,
…I have a Greenpoint question for you. What do you think is the best bakery in the neighborhood? I’ve been tasked with bringing a cake to my family’s Thanksgiving celebration, and thought I would try to order something from a place in the neighborhood. Do Polish bakeries tend to take orders? Are they usually open on Thanksgiving morning? I realize that’s actually three questions, but if you know the answer to the first one I’d very very grateful.
WOW… where do I start? Well, I will preface by stating I that tend to stay away from sweets. There are two reasons for this:
1. I am a very, VERY picky eater (just ask my parents or the Mister).
2. Too much sugar makes yours truly bounce off the walls.
The previous disclosures having been made, I have to say my favorite bakery is Jubilatka. Advice/Tips:
- If they are offering apple pie, BUY IT! They do not go overboard with the sugar. The sweetness of the apples they use carries the day!
- Jubilatka usually rolls out a pretty nice assortment of babka this time of year. Their chocolate/ginger bread babka, as I learned last year, is pretty— and tasty!
My piece having been said (and knowing there are many great bakeries here), I am going to offer up Mark’s question to my commenters. What is your favorite Polish Bakery— and why?

I have no idea what precipitated this act of culinary vandalism (vigilantism?). All I’m saying is Newman’s Own (as seen in the second photo) doesn’t come cheap. But hey, I suppose since some of the proceeds do go to charity…

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: Annual Bazaar
This item comes from Jan, who writes:
Here’s the flyer for St. John’s Annual Bazaar Nov. 13th. The fun stuff is really cool!
The Ham dinner is OUTSTANDING. The Gerke family who makes this are multigenerational St. John’s members and many years ago ran a pub (like Teddy’s) over here. This was one of their specialties.

Doug (who took the above photograph) writes:
saw this today at 312 Bedford Av.
there was a bodega there called Espinal Deli, sitting between Videology and Dumont Burger and they closed this week. They had the rent doubled I heard. Who knows, but the close was sudden to me as a regular customer.

Found On Huron Street
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
This handsome chap was found by Ryan, who writes:
Found this cat this morning on Huron Street, between Manhattan and McGuinness. Posted these photos to your group page on Flickr. Currently have the guy in my bathroom, but my cat’s not very happy about this.
Very friendly cat; probably a lost indoor.
Went to the local pet stores and gave them my number in case someone is out searching. Going to call BARC in a minute…any other advice you may have would be welcome. This is my first street cat intervention so you may know more than I…
I have advised that Ryan reach out the the guys (and gals) at Dog Habitat to see if they can lend a hand, so hopefully I ‘ll get an update soon. In the meantime if you know to whom this striking gent belongs please contact Ryan via email at: ryanleephillips (at) airpost (dot) net (see the update!)
Thanks!
