LAST GASP, Part I: Crosstown Local Photo Du Jour

Erin (who sent me the above photo) writes:

Just in case anyone was wondering why the g wasn’t running tonight. Looks like there’s a gp arsonist in our midst.

Methinks the MTA has finally pushed some Crosstown Local patron over the edge. Damn.

Greenpoint Restaurant Watch: Open & Soon To Be!

First up (and as many of you have probably deduced), I was wrong about the opening date for Grill & Greens. Fortunately when I walked by today I saw something very promising: a big bowl of eggplant just waiting to be rendered into delicious babaganoush. I asked the men present when they planned to open: they’re hoping for tomorrow. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime you can peruse their menu by clicking here.

Lastly, I have had a number of people ask me about the status of Vamos Al Tequila. I am pleased to announce are open (have been since Sunday, May 9— hey, I at least I got one right!) and I tried their foodstuffs last night. Before I proceed I would like to male two things clear upfront:

  1. I am very fussy about Mexican food.
  2. Given my recent experience (READ: vomiting my brains out) at the hands of San Loco I probably should not have ordered enchiladas. In fact, I probably should have waited a few more days before trying this establishment: my palette and stomach are still a bit, um, touchy.

I ordered cheese enchiladas rojas. While I very much liked the accompanying rice and refried beans, the enchiladas themselves didn’t so much for me: the cheese stuffing was not melted (to my taste) and the sauce struck me as being a bit salty. Methinks next time I am going to order verde sauce instead.

I do not want to come off as panning Vamos Al Tequila (I’m not— if I was I wouldn’t make it known I plan to go back!). The service was very friendly, a number of the items on the menu (which you can see by clicking here) looked intriguing (the Abril Avocado Torta and Aqua de Jamaica* among them) and lest we forget: they have only been open a few days. In other words: I’m going to wait a week or two and give ’em another try.

CAVEAT: as of yesterday Vamos Al Tequila’s credit card machine had yet to arrive and they were still awaiting their liquor license.

*If you have not tried this, do so. It’s wonderful— especially on a hot summer day. That is, if summer ever comes. If today is any indication of what’s to come I have my doubts.

New York Shitty Slide Show Du Jour: Underneath The Greenpoint Hospital

(Or more accurately: its Outpatient Annex.)

As I mentioned in this post the folks at St. Nick’s are having an open call for artists. Well, as promised today I took a tour of the space they are converting into an art and performance space. All things said it is very much a work in progress. Having just completed asbestos abatement, they can now move forward finishing the space. This is not to suggest that one cannot see the potential: you can. The main area would be perfect as a performance or installation space, to cite just one example. In addition, it was really neat to poke around the labyrinth of rooms, closets and antechambers in their pre-rehabilitated state. If you are into urban decay you are going to love this photo set. Enjoy!

Anyone interested in proposing an on-site installation or performance, wants to submit work for their open call or simply has questions about this space should contact Laura McLelland @ lmclelland (at) stnicksalliance (dot) org. Oh yeah, be sure to read the submission specs and requirements first!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Kite Day Cometh!

With the weather being as dreary as it is I was delighted to get a reminder from a reader named Ruth that this upcoming Saturday, May 15, is Kite Day at McCarren Park! Those of you who have yet to check this out really should— it’s a lot of fun. What’s more, it is for  good cause; it’s a fundraiser for P.S. 132!

Kite Day
May 15, 2010 starting at noon

P.S.: You can see photos of last year’s festivities by clicking here.

New York Shitty Day Starter: Picnic?

Jay Lombard (who forwarded this McCarren Park still life) to me opines:

If fire isn’t allowed inside the park was this salmon prepared tartar? Maybe sashimi? Either way it looks like a feast was had and they left plenty behind – gotta work on those knife skills.

Agreed. The stuff of “Top Chef” this most decidedly isn’t. This is individual could also use a little boning up (no intention) on his (or her) sign reading skills as well. Makes me think of a song…
