dyspepsia

As some of you might have noticed today’s offerings were a bit— how should we say— delayed? This is because yesterday the Mister finally succumbed to the lovely stomach ailment that seems to be making the rounds hereabouts. As for who gave him this delightful gift keeps on giving? Well, that was yours truly of course! Marriage is, after all, all about sharing.

This one’s for you, Mister Heather.

THIS WEEK: Meet Jo Anne Simon

This item comes courtesy of Teresa Toro, who writes:

Dear Neighbors and Friends:

As you know, I am strongly and proudly supporting Jo Anne Simon in her campaign to be our next City Councilmember.  Jo Anne’s years of experience as an effective community leader, on issues ranging from affordable housing to accountable government, to truck traffic and parking reform, make her the best possible representative for us.

But why listen to me?

Come meet Jo Anne this Wednesday, August 5th.  We’ll be at The Gibson (Bedford Avenue and North 11th Street) from 7pm.  You can ask her your tough questions about why she’s the best person to represent us, and learn more about why she is running for the seat…

I encourage each and every one of you who is interested in the 33rd District City Council race to attend this event. And, dear readers, you should be interested: whoever is elected to fill David Yassky’s vacant seat will have serious ramifications for north Brooklyn. Any and all interested in this opportunity to meet Jo Anne Simon (who, it should be noted, is the only female candidate in this packed race) can RSVP via email at: contact (at) joanneforcouncil (dot) com.

Let’s give Ms. Simon a hearty Greenpoint welcome!

Meet Jo Anne Simon
August 5, 2009 starting at 7:00 p.m.
The Gibson
108 Bedford Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11211

Otherwise, those of you who cannot attend this “meet and greet” can learn more about Ms. Simon by clicking here.

You can always leave it to the good ol’ Greenpoint Hotel to liven up an otherwise dull— if cloyingly muggy— Sunday afternoon in the Garden Spot of the Universe.

The above photographs were taken today at 5:50 p.m. After asking a few bystanders what happened (none knew) I finally spoke to a gentleman standing in front of the San Diego Laundromat (which is located on the corner of Clay Street and Manhattan Avenue in the armpit of this flophouse megaplex). Here’s what he had to say:

…It’s the guys next door. (pointing to the Greenpoint Hotel) This happens about five times a month. Always a false alarm. That’s why we don’t worry about it. Maybe one day when they come it will be for real?

I told him I hope that never happens— but who knows?

Not that this incident appears to have negatively impacted interest in the “warm*, cozy, cheap” rooms this establishment is offering. Why outlay money for cable to watch “Cops” or “Rescue Me” when you can live it?

For only $500.00 a month.

Miss Heather

*Per someone who is currently living there these “cozy” rooms are stiflingly warm— and stuffy. It IS August after all.

Today, as has often been the case this summer, I had planned to go out and do a little urban exploring only to be foiled by rain. I suspect I speak for my fellow sunshine lovers when I write that I am more than a little nonplussed by this year’s Seattle-esque weather. What to do on a dreary day such this? Well, you could do some much-needed housecleaning and get caught up on email (which is what I will probably be doing) OR you could grab a bowl of popcorn and curl up to watch a good movie. Which brings me to this.

Dear Miss Heather,

As a regular reader (and big fan) of your blog I just wanted to say thanks for the great work you do on documenting Greenpoint’s many sights sounds smells and happenings. I’ve lived in the Greenpoint and Williamsburg area since 1997 and here on Eagle St for 4-5 years. I wish there had been blogs like yours 12 years ago when i first moved here, but then again, we had fun walking the area and learning about the neighborhoods of new york on our own too I suppose. But you have the best news source in our beautiful (sic) neighborhood going.

Since June I have recently been writing a very small film blog called the Ojos de Aguila Film Review, that generally tends towards unknown or under-known or under-appreciated or obscure or hard to find films. It is a strictly not for profit blog and perhaps you or your readers may be interested in some of the postings…

I checked out this site and it looks very promising. If you, dear readers, have the time this afternoon I’d encourage you to do the same. Who knows? It might help you to pick a flick to while away this rainy day.
