From The New York Shitty Inbox: The Return Of Three Decker!

Yesterday I saw them hanging a “Grand Opening” sign and today I get an email from my buddy Sherry giving me the good news: Manhattan 3 Decker (or Triple Decker as I say) will reopen tomorrow! She writes:

…Three Decker (or Triple Decker, as you call it) is re-opening tomorrow. Don’t let the colorful flags and banners (which are on display today) fool you.

Duly noted. Personally I am delighted they did not mess with the fabulous 1960’s-1970’s facade. That’s what makes it so special!

I suspect I speak for many when I write that newspaper stands are by and large a blight on this city. They are ugly, clutter the sidewalk and are more often than not filled with refuse. The previous is why I find this one so special. Not only has it been lovingly decoupaged from top to bottom but it is rather easy on the eyes. I love it!

New York Shitty Day Starter: Happy Birthday Mr. Heather!

August 25, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic

Yes folks, it’s that time of year again. And with each August 25th yours truly endeavors to find some new way of demonstrating her affection. Over the years this has entailed:

1. Refusing to undo the chain on the front door (on a 100 degree day) until he showed me the champagne he purchased (so as to ascertain if it was of acceptable quality) and handed it over.

2. Giving him a photo album of “candid boudoir photography” I found at the junk for him to peruse over his first cup of morning coffee. It had the same effect on him as it did on me: he lost his appetite.

And much, much more.

Believe it or not the Mister takes all of this in good stride. He has learned, as many marrieds can attest, that silence is anything but golden when it comes to one’s spouse: it means you are in deep shit. Torment is a sign of interest. In my case it’s how I show I care. But I digress.

I have spent the better part of a month trying to concoct this year’s bit of chicanery. I thought about changing the locks and going for a walk but given the mild weather I decided against it. I considered replacing his regular coffee with decaf and waiting for the inevitable caffeine-withdrawal to work its magic— but that struck me as being too mean. What’s more, I have pulled this one before (albeit on someone else): it can backfire. In my case I ended up being on the receiving end of my mark’s decaffeinated D.T.’s. Not fun.

The sad news is, dear readers, I have drawn a blank. So an item from the New York Shitty archives will have to suffice. Which brings me to the image gracing this post. It was with this item that I pulled what is arguably the most diabolical prank I have ever perpetrated. It came from a pack of Polaroids a friend of mine found behind a movie sound stage on Diamond Street. Those who are in the know can and will attest the gent in this photo bears more than a passing resemblance to the Mister. So I decided to have a little fun and email this image to our respective families. Hilarity ensued.

Happy birthday, Mr. Heather. Here’s to another year— putting up with (and facilitating) my shit. May you have many more! You are the Sancho Panza to my Don Quixote. Or perhaps vice versa? In any case, you have taught me a few things about Greenpoint politics.

This is for you.

New York Shitty Video Du Jour: A Fish Tale

August 24, 2010 ·
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Newtown Creek

It would appear someone caught a fish in Newtown Creek and employed it (along with some gray paint— or perhaps this substance too was derived the creek? I certainly wouldn’t rule it out, in any case.) for a little art project on Manhattan Avenue. Enjoy!

Does anyone have the 411 on this? If so, please share via comments or shoot me an email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Your identity will remain anonymous if you so desire. Thanks!

UPDATE, 10:09 p.m.: It would appear this fish swam (or for those of you who believe in evolution: crawled) upstream… all the way to the Newtown Creek Nature Walk!

Laura (who took the above photos) writes:

Hi Heather! Evidently, the fish prints you found at Manhattan St. End Park, lead down to the Nature Walk. Mike and I ended up debating about them. At one point the fish appear on the wall of the NCWPCP. I like the fish. Mike doesn’t.

Are we Greenpointers witnessing the birth of a new species or is it spawning season in the Garden Spot? I can only hope so— on both counts. Given the contentious nature of our soon-to-be past summer our community could use a little love. In any case, prior to this fish tale this park has been utilized/repurposed as:

  1. A hamster burial ground
  2. A campsite/squat

I can hardly wait to see what’s next.

When I stumbled upon this gentleman strumming a ballad on his cane by the C-Town this afternoon I pointed out he should have a cup to receive tips. Initially he was confused by this and stated:

But we are not playing any music.

So I took a moment to explain that I found their performance much more compelling than most of the stuff I see on Bedford Avenue nowadays. I also made the mistake of hinting that if he did have a cup I would tip him. Sure enough, out came not one but two cups.

Okay, I’ll readily admit I totally walked into this one. But hey, if I am going to be hoodwinked I’d prefer it be for two bucks and by resourceful (and nice) guys like this duo. Besides, after I tendered my two bucks other people took noticed and followed suit!
