LAST GASP: Tipper R.I.P.

It is with a heavy heart I announce that Tipper, the big brother and den mother to the Oak Street kittens, has passed on. I learned this today from the woman whose property his little pride inhabits: her name is Jane. She said it happened a couple weeks ago and she has no idea what happened. One day she left her house and found him dead.

Goodbye little angel. You will be missed.

Miss Heather

  4. I knew it, I was just about to email you and tell you I hadn’t seen him and I thought the worst. The black & white one born last year has been gone for weeks too, I wonder if he passed away also. That is so sad, I wonder what happened?? The 2 kittens are still there and the yellow & white cat has moved in lately. One of the kittens kind of looks pregnant, the runty one with the white paws.

I am so sad about Tipper! He was only about 3, I think he was from the litter that was there the year I moved onto this street. ๐Ÿ™ !!! It seems sort of suspicious that Tipper and the b&w one are gone right around the same time, I hope that rumor about people poisoning cats on this street isn’t true.

  8. Ugh…I knew it. I had a terrible feeling because I hadn’t seen him in weeks, either. I was hoping you might get the scoop, because I hadn’t seen Jane to ask her about it. I loved this little cat. In fact, I just talked with Jane for the first time about a month ago, telling her how much I loved this cat and would adopt him in a second if I could (unfortunately, there were too many reasons I couldn’t…yeah, I know, there always are…)

What she might not have told you is how, a couple months ago, they had another terrible experience with one of the other members of the “cat family” (what my husband & I call the Oak Street cats). One of Jane’s neighbors put spikes up around their backyard fence to keep the cats out (don’t know which neighbors), and the little grey & white female who is always pregnant (she is very shy and they have not been able to catch her to spay her) fell on them and was impaled. Jane’s husband found her, still alive, and she was taken to the vet and saved, but of course to a very high vet bill. The family has been nursing her back to health. The good news is that she will not be able to have any more kittens (I think she was the source of all the new kittens in the yard).

At any rate, much love to Jane and her family for watching over these little cats, and of course to dear little Stripey. It is a hard life for anything living on the city streets.

And to D: I think the older jellicle cat comes and goes pretty regularly–I wouldn’t be worried that you haven’t seen him. He might not come by again since Stripey is gone, who was his adoptive mother.

  10. @ bulgy: Jane told me about the momma cat getting caught on the spikes. Personally I think it is kind of sick that someone would construct that kind of thing. There are other ways to keeps cats away that do not involve getting mangled.

  12. Thanks for the info, bulgy. That mother was the source of all the kittens, I knew they always had a hard time catching her to get her fixed. So I guess out of the horrible news about her being impaled, the good news is she can’t have any more litters in that yard. The 2 kittens are the last, unless one of them gets pregnant.

I’m still so upset about Tipper, I’m going to be upset for a long time. My greatest hope was that he would find a home somehow but then again, though he was social for an outdoor cat, maybe he wouldn’t have adjusted well to indoor living. RIP sweet baby. ๐Ÿ™
