A McCarren Park PSA: Clean!

Upon seeing the above woman hosing out the womens’ “comfort station” I simply had to pay it a visit. Sure enough, the interior was wet (as she, the helpful parks employee she was, politely warned me) but everything was more or less spic and span. Inasmuch as can be expected, anyway. For those of you who have been keeping count, the cleansing (exorcism?) of the McCarren Park bathrooms took no less than five days. As for the state of the mens’ lavatory, well, I will have to leave that to you guys to find out… but it looks encouraging!

Regrettably I learned a few minutes later on Lorimer Street this most auspicious turn of events came a little too late for one north Brooklynite.

Uh-oh.

That’s rough!

What came first the cup or the crap?

Noticing a woman was headed my direction walking a dog I felt compelled to warn her. It has been my observation that canines are rather fond of such things. She thanked me and went on to opine:

Disgusting.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Oh wait: I did. In closing (and for those of you who are wondering) what you have just seen is not anomaly: it’s what McCarren Park looks like after any given spring/summer weekend.

CAVEAT: It isn’t pretty.

Breaking On The NY Post: The McCarren Park Bathrooms Are Disgusting!

Not that this is really news to me, the readers of this web site or those who have had the misfortune of patronizing the McCarren Park bathrooms, mind you. That’s yesterday’s news. What IS news to me, rather, is apparently the Post finds it not only acceptable to poach from blogs— to which I have regrettably grown accustomed— but now they have kicked it up a notch by actually “quoting” the blogger whose material they “sourced”!

But don’t take my word for it. Look at the following screencap and decide for yourself. It is an item I posted on the Community Board 1 Yahoo group making my friends and neighbors aware of the deplorable state of the woman’s comfort station at McCarren Park. Note the date.

Just for kicks here’s a screencap of what a few other people had to say about the state of our public lavatories.

Charming, eh? If Mr. Murdoch, et. al. is so keen on poaching my material and has now seen fit to quote me perhaps he should just bite the bullet and hire me? Scratch that. Why should he buy the cow when he can get the milk for free?

This item was brought to my attention by a chap named Charles. Starting June 19 the peeps at In God We Trust and The Parlour will be opening up their backyards to host the Greenpoint Backyard Bazaar. The details on this event’s web site as of the writing of this post are sparse but I am going to to check back… often! This sounds really neat!

New York Shitty Day Ender: The Other Superfund

This stunning image hails from Maspeth Creek English Kills and comes from krugerlive who writes:

…i have a lot more shooting to do here. matt and i were stopped about 4 times by people asking if we were turrists. i was not allowed to shoot to the left of this shot because it’s the city’s only control point of natural gas. you’d think telling me how vulnerable that spot is would be more dangerous than letting me take photos from a public road.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Kika Goes Home!

June 1, 2010 ·

Some of you might remember this lovely lass. I posted her photograph last week here on New York Shitty. She was found at the corner of Dupont Street and Manhattan Avenue and the guys (and gals) of Dog Habitat were desperately trying to locate her rightful owner. Well today I received some very good news! Jay writes:

I know Rob told you the great news yesterday but I wanted to thank you for helping to reunite a lost dog with her owner. One of your readers (who lives in Manhattan) called late Sunday night and said ‘I was just looking at a photo on newyorkshitty and I think you have my brother’s dog’ It was true! Thanks to your blog, Kika, is safely back home!

We are so thrilled that this story has a happy ending. All too often a lost or stray animal ends up in the shelter system and the odds are stacked against them (especially pit bulls like, Kika). Please help encourage your readers to microchip their cats and dogs!

That’s very good advice Jay— and I am glad I could help Kika find her way back home!
